I recently bought a rather overpriced Dimension 8400 from Dell but have found out that it has a weird bug/error/problem with the operating system. Every time I boot up the computer the System32 folder appears. It is not a massive problem it’s just annoying. I have looked in Startup but there appears to be no command to open the folder there. The exact same has happened to my friend that bought a Dimension 4700 and we have tried ringing Dell technical support but they cannot think of why this be happening and so couldn't solve the problem  .

If anyone could help i would be highly appreciative
    Thanks
    Alex

System32 Folder Opens When Logging on to Windows XP, Windows 2000, or Windows NT 4.0

More information is in the link above ^...
    SYMPTOMS
When you log on to Microsoft Windows, a Microsoft Windows Explorer window may open that displays the contents of the System32 folder.

This behavior also occurs if there is a String value that contains only a single quote character ( ") as the Value data in the following Registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
    CAUSE
This behavior can occur if a null, incomplete, or damaged entry exists in the registry.
    RESOLUTION
WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

Use Registry Editor to view the following two Windows registry keys:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
Verify that all the values in these keys do not contain any incorrect, incomplete, or null entries (such as " ").

    ------------
Not "exclusive to" but "known for" such an issue is Sound Audigy card owners. If you have a Sound Blaster Audigy 2 sound card, see:

    www.kellys-korner.com/xp_tweaks.htm, Line 260
    System32 Folder Opens Upon Boot

This is an often used trusted site so don't let the *.vbs script fix scare you. VirusScan it if you like, which should be a standard practice anyway. It just corrects the entry in the registry. You can open this in notepad and take a look if it worries you.

Also make sure you don't have a buggy incomplete shortcut loaded from your startup folder. Check this via the startbutton>All Programs> "startup "
