I am very tired and the sound of my computer usually keeps me up, so I put my system into sleep mode every night. Yesterday however my system would not stay in sleep for more than a few seconds. It goes into the sleep mode, but then immediately comes back up into my log in screen without me touching anything. I ignored the problem and just shut it off, but now im getting kind of mad because it is doing it for the second night in a row. If this post is kinda garbled, I apologize, as I stated, I am very tired.

check bios' 'wake on' settings and turn em all off.

    most have:

    ring
    lan
    mouse
    keyboard

there may be more or less - depends on u'r pc make/model and bios

The BIOS is accessed by repeatedly pressing Del (or F1 - depends on the make of bios) as the computer boots to the POST screen (the text based screen that generally appears as soon as the computer is powered up).

Often that screen has a message at the bottom of the screen along the lines of 'Press Del to enter Setup'.

If Del or F1 do not work for you post the make of your computer and bios.

hmm.. I accessed the bios screen and saw nothing like you were describing, the closest thing I found on that menu were the power saver settings, which had three options, none of wich were even close to dealing with the subject at hand. I will post everything that was on the menu, and the make of the chip later if you need it. Thanks again though.

Now this is strange. I shutdown my computer entirely last night and after about 10 minutes it started up again! So, I shut it off again and the same thing happened about 5 minutes later. This happend 5 TIMES! Eventually I unplugged the power cord.

Read this post and post a HJT log in the Removing Spyware & Viruses forum.

Again check in your BIOS .
    Common settings overlooked are the
"On Power failure / restore => Resume" this will make it power up if there is a glitch in the power. (Change to off )

"Wake on LAN" will make it power up if there is an incoming signal on ethernet if the appropriate jumper or cable is connected.

"Wake on modem ring" again will power on if your phone rings. Meant so it can answer incomming fax.

"Wake on keyboard" allows using keyboard as power switch. I discovered this one when my Siamese cat kept turning on my pc because she liked to watch the monitor and bat the mouse around to see the arrow move.

    How to configure your bios
