    Win 2000 Pro
username Anna - on login we found that instead of the userprofile being set to c:\D & S\anna it was set to C:\D & S\anna.anna and this directory had been created. Other system variables reflected this eg APPDATA and HOMEPATH.

I have no idea what caused the change, and cannot put it right.

    Can anyone help please?

I've worked out why it happened

It looks like the original profile for anna was damaged, probably on closedown.
On the next logon, with no usable profile, the logon process creates another one. As the folder c:\D & S\anna already exists it creates a new one using username.userdomain - as the computer name is also anna , this results in anna.anna

So half the problem solved - but can I alter the system variables to point it back to where I want it?

Yes you are exactly right. When you see 2 profiles and one of them has a .anna or what ever. Then that profile was damaged beyond use by windows so it did its best to create a new profile. Since the names must be unique it adds the extension.

The profiles can be damaged by improper power off but also by Viri or Malware! Update Virus and Malware programs and test.

The system variables are poperly handling the change even tho they seem to be mismatched do not change or force these, Windows knows best.

The best way to handle this is to backup My Documents and Emails to another location. Then delete both users and reboot. Then delete both profiles in Documents and settings. Then create a user like the original Anna use her original password and log on to finish creating her profile.

Then copy and paste the backed up documents back to the new My documents folder and restore the email.

The email is stored in (Example):
    C:\Documents and Settings\Anna\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{EC8749AD-9AAB-4144-954D-68A6F8CBC353}\Microsoft\OutLook Express
