[My OS is Windows 98 1st Edition.]

In an older IBM computer (which once had Linux as OS), I've been trying to get my soundcard to work. Weeks ago I installed Win98 1st Edition as the single OS on the single HDD in this computer. Recently I ran into some files problem (can't recall exactly what was wrong) but was forced to use my Win98 CD to re-install Win98 on the computer.
After the re-installation of Win98 as OS, I downloaded the Realtek AC'97 audio files to update the soundcard. I run the installation of this but when the Windows drum starts beating (to show updating of various system and settings files) the Windows update never finishes: it stalls at around 85% completion. I wait and wait and then have to hit ctrl-alt-delete twice to re-start the computer.

What's wrong and how is this fixed?

[My OS is Windows 98 1st Edition.]

    Thanks

Before anyone gets a brain cramp trying to sort this out, we all seem to agree (I know from experience and I know PeteC agrees) don't use Windows Updates for updating your drivers. (In fact, the bad experience may have been updating my AC97 drivers).

    IBM support:

If you are not sure of the model, click the link "machine type-model" above the Search box. Use the method I suggested in the Hardware forum thread:
    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=53435
That will ensure that you completely remove old or incorrect drivers.
