I had pop ups all the time of XP Antimalware 2011, a virus. I ran Spybot and Malwarebytes. I reinstalled Windows and haven't been able to access the internet since that time. I'm contacting you on my other laptop that has a connection. Device Manager shows yellow question and exclamation marks on Other Devices, Ethernet Controller, Network Controller, etc. I have no network icon in the system tray. When I attempt to connect to the internet using Explorer, it says "The page cannot be displayed." I have little computer knowledge so I hope I explained my problem so it can be understood.

When you reinstalled Windows - after a full format? - did you install the chipset drivers, etc for the motherboard? I suspect that you did not.

If you fill in your System Details fully we might be able to point you in the right direction for the drivers.

    Pete,

I did not install chip set drivers. I have a Dell Latitude D 820, Intel Centrino Duo, XP Pro Version 2002 SP2, T 2400 @ 1.83 GHz 2.00 GB RAM. Hope this helps. Please ask if I didn't provide enough information, this is all I found in System Properties.

    Mr. Bill,

Thanks for the Dell Support link. If I can't connect to the internet, how do I install the drivers? I do have an external hard drive, but am unsure how to use it to install things on my computer.

CD/DVD or a Thumb/Flash drive. I am surprised that windows didn't load the NIC card. Usually does and you can connect wired and get the updates.

When I go to the link you provided, it only asks if I want to install. How do I get it to save to a CD, I don't get a prompt to save. I don't want to install it on my D620 that I using now! Sorry that I'm such a beginner, I know it must be frustrating. My downloads usually just get saved in My Docs Download folder.

MrBill's link leads to the BIOS which you do not require. The full list of drivers for your Dell D820 is here .....

    http://support.dell.com/support/dow...mID=LATITUDE D820&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=&impid=

The drivers you require are in the Network section - use Device Manager to determine the hardware installed on the laptop and download the drivers to your other laptop. The Download button gives you the option of Run or Save - choose Save and then transfer the driver across to the D820 using a USB stick or burn to CD and install.

    Pete,

As before, after I select the drivers to download, I get a window that flashes on then off that gives the option to RUN or SAVE. After that window it asks if I want to INSTALL or DON'T INSTALL. I don't install because I don't want those drivers to install on my Latitude D620! How do I get that window to remain open so I can select SAVE?

I am not seeing the same behaviour

Click on the Download button - screenshot and this window appears - screenshot

Click on Download via Browser and the Save/Run option appears - screenshot.

Screen captures from my old XP box using IE 8

If you can't progress with this I think your best bet is to get a computer savvy friend to help out.

Anything I download goes straight to my Downloads folder in My Docs. I changed the setting to save on my Desktop. When I try to download and save, the window still flashes on and off quickly, then asks if I want to install or don't install. I'm waiting for instruction from you, I don't want to install on the computer that I'm using, the D620. The drives I download should be for the D820 I'm trying to fix!

I get the first window on the link you sent. Maybe I need to download the Download Manager. I can try that. I just go into the install or don't install window. You're right, I may need to get someone more into computers that I am to help me. Thanks for all your help with this. I appreciate the time you've taken. Nana

It doesn't appear on the desktop, I never get the chance to save it to the desktop or any other place. I never get the second or third window you show in your screen shots.

If you have a friend with a computer try downloading on that and transferring to a USB stick or CD.

    Pete,
Saved drivers to CD. Came home and the same thing happened! After a little reading, I learned that I had to install at the prompt, it just installed the Driver Download Manager which you have ton do before it will download all the drivers. It also had to do a Genuine Check.exe, and give me a validation code to enter before I could download. I did finally get it all downloaded and am installing an antivirus and the programs I use!! Thanks so much for all the help.

The Validation is from Windows and is required. Always does that. On a new or clean install, there are a ton of downloads from Windows.
