The last couple of weeks I've been getting a continual system sound (that plays when you plug in a USB device)--it will beep 2 or 3 times in rapid succession.... then nothing for an hour or so, then it will occur every 5 minutes for a while, then nothing....

I reinstalled Windows 7 last weekend (for that and other reasons), still no change. I swapped out USB mice, thinking the one I had was bad--no change. I installed a new driver for my card reader--still happening.

Not sure what it could be. I have several USB ports. I suppose I should just go in and uninstall the drivers for all of them. I looked on the support page for the OEM for my laptop, but they didn't have drivers for usb ports. I'm a little hesitant to do this, given that I don't have any downloaded USB drivers--does Windows supply them automatically?

    Anything else to try?

    Hi Paul,

If I remember correctly, no separate drivers are required for USB ports ... they're included in the OS.

This is not the answer you're looking for, I'm sure, but normally I keep the sound turned off on my system.

My system includes a power director sitting under my monitor, with separate switches for my computer, monitor, speakers, and each of my two external hard drives. The speakers and external drives are normally switched off unless I need to use them.

I'd rather not have to manually disable a mute button whenever I wanted to hear Spotify or a video of some kind.

I thought of merely disabling that system sound, but I like knowing (when I am plugging in a usb device) that the system has recognized it. I suppose I could always look in the system tray... I don't know.

If there is some solution I'll try it--if not, perhaps disabling that system sound would be the best alternate.

Did you try Control Panel\Sound, then in the dialog box clicking the Sounds tab. Click on the drop down arrow next heading Windows Default and choosing No Sounds Save As apply and ok. You can also use the list to choose for which sound you want or not want for individual actions. I have mine set up under Windows Default. I keep my volume muted and when I want listen music I just Unmute the volume.

OK that tells me where to go. I'd prefer to troubleshoot, but this is kind of strange, and if I can't, I'll just mute sound for that one event (most likely plugging in a usb device).

Went there and disabled only the sounds for device connect and disconnect.

Nothing else worked. I uninstalled drivers for every entry in the USB section of the device manager. Stupid noise was driving me crazy. OK IIRC there is something in the system tray when you connect a new device, so that should cue me if there is an issue or not. OK I'll see if this does it.

When I said "nothing else worked," I meant that this is why I went ahead and disabled the connect & disconnect device sounds.

Since I did that, I haven't heard those sounds any more, so that must have been it.

Oops sorry, I must have misread you post #11. Thanks for the update. I guess you can mark this thread resolved.
