Hi Wolfden - Welcome to the Board :)

Bad news - you have the Blaster Worm Virus see this Microsoft article
    http://www.microsoft.com/security/incident/blast.asp

Very unwise - you are totally unprotected from viruses. You should not even consider logging onto the Internet without an antivirus program running - fully updated and a firewall.

Do yourself a favour and download a free antivirus program - AVG is highly recommended on the Board - update the virus definitions as soon as you have it installed.

As you are running XP make sure that the inbuilt firewall is running - this has many deficiencies, but is better than nothing. You can download a free firewall from Kerio - a little difficult to configure, but generall accepted as having the edge over Zone Alarm

    Hello Wolfden,

Your first step is to abort the shutdown by entering the command "shutdown /a" (no quotes) in the Start menu's Run dialog. Then you will have time to go to the article(s).

    Hi Wolden
I hope you have all your work backed up.
I cought this blaster virus myself only recently after doing a reformat and reinstall. the first thing i did with my nice clean computer was go online for any email i missed while not having my comp and all of a sudden the shutdown in 60 seconds box poped up. At first i was not sure what it was but i soon wised up.

Did another reformat and install, put on the xp firewall, installed zone alarm which i keep on disk, went back on line and went straight to the windows update site and downloaded the patch for this virus. (not sure which one this is but im sure someone will have the specific no of it for you). After that everything was fine
Its a pain i know but you will get it sorted im sure. Good Luck
