    Hello Conrad,

Shut SR off, reboot and turn it back on. That will get rid of any corrupted entries and will, when turned back on, give you a new SR point to start off with.

Control panel > performance and maintenance (If XP view) > System > System Restore tab.

    Regards - Charles

Thanks Charles for the reply. However when I tried that way I get this message.
    RunnDll
    an exception occurred while trying to run "shell32.dll, control_rundll "c "\windows\system32\sysdm.cpl,System "

    Any other thoughts? Thanks again

    Hi Conrad,

I would at this point run sfc (system file checker) to replace corrupt or missing windows file(s).

Look at this thread on how to do that: http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=20877

I would also wait awhile for others to chime in here before doing the sfc.

    Regards - Charles

    system restore

I waited to see if any other replies before doing the SFC. I did the SFC today and then restarted the computer and get the same thing.

One thing I failed to mention before was that I replaced the hard drive a month or so back and used the Maxtor cd to copy all to the new hard drive. I had to turn off the system restore before doing that and then turned it back on after the change. I know of nothing else that I did to this computer.
Looks like I may be at a dead end. The computer works ok just can not get the system restore to let me in.
Under MSCONFIG I see the service running.
    Any other thoughts? Thanks Conrad

    system restore Problem fixed

I turned the system restore service off in msconfig, rebooted, shut down again and then turned it back on, rebooted and the thing works now. I am not sure just what fixed it, but am happy now. Thanks Charles.

    Hi Conrad,

Did you look at the event viewer to see what sfc did if anything? One trouble with sfc is it's lack of information about what's it doing.

The other possibility is shutting down SR as a service instead of having SR stop monitoring drives thru Control Panel - System.

    Regards - Charles
