Hello Mary and welcome to the Board :)

Windows 98 does not have the System Restore feature, only WinMe and XP have it.

You mean Restore a backup registry? This is only restoring a backup registry, won't help you with missing files.
Restart in Dos Mode, type in this command.
    scanreg /restore
Pick a registry that has the date you want. BTW, by default you have 5 backups, one for each day the computer is turned on.

Scanreg /restore is pretty good. You will still need to uninstall problem software and reinstall anything you installed after the registry you're returning to.

I discovered recently a program that somehow eluded me all these years. PowerQuest SecondChance. Beats the heck out of Symantec GoBack as it doesn't constantly chugga chugga the hard drive to log changes. It just sets a point either on a schedule or when you decide to create a checkpoint. No changes to the hard drive's boot sector either.

It's discontinued now. I recently bought a new cd on Ebay. The newer 2.07 version is better because it doesn't run AutoExec TSR's and is also compatible with Windows Me. That's even harder to find. I managed to find PowerQuest SystemTools 2005. Since Symantec, who now owns the discontinued PowerQuest product, does not offer the free 2.07 update I had no qualms about using the one on that collection cd. Heck, at least I bought the 2.0 version! That's supposed to entitle me to get 2.07.

This won't help you with a current problem, but if you can manage to find it you will be able to fully restore your system and all files and programs from any checkpoint it makes. Even better than SystemRestore! You can also tell it what folders to ignore (like My Documents, Favorites, Cookies, etc).

I suppose it was discontinued because of the advent of Windows XP and SystemRestore. It's so similar no one would buy it even if they made an XP version. It was good for Windows Me though. It actually works properly, unlike Me's SystemRestore which many times did not.

It also makes a boot floppy so you can restore if Windows won't boot. Not only that, but the dos version can be run without the boot floppy from the Command Prompt Only screen (DosMode).
