Just read in a related thread that System Restore points can consume up to 12.5% of your HD space.

    A couple of questions:

Can these be selectively deleted? (Just keep the last two or so)?
Can they be pointed to store on a different drive (just trying to keep C clean)?
I have an external HD with LOTS of room. If I bought something like Norton Ghost, could I do away with the system restore points all together?

And, finally (phew - lots to learn!) can a ghosted image be compressed for archival purposes (thus reducing storage space).

I SOOO appreciate all the help and direction here. Thanks!

You cannot selectively delete System Restore points as such, but you can do as you ask - keep the last one or two ....

First method is to Open up the System Restore - (Right Click My Computer > Properties > System Restore tab > Settings) and move the slider to the left to adjust the amount of drive space allocated to System Restore.

    or

Run Disk Cleanup (Right Click on the drive in My Computer > Properties > Disk Clean Up - allow that to assess what can be cleaned and in the summary dialogue box click on More Options tab > System Restore which will delete all system restore points except the last.

System Restore points cannot be moved to a different drive. If you have System Restore enabled for all drives points will be generated on each drive for that particular drive. You can turn off System Restore completely - unwise - or for all drives except C:\ - wise - as they carry no system data.

In theory, if you Ghosted the drive you could do away with System Restore - BUT you would need to keep your ghost image up to date - it will only restore to the state the computer was in when you last ghosted. System restore makes regular check points and is likely to be more current. The answer is - use both.

Ghosted images are compressed when created - the degree of compression may be set in the ghosting program.
