My son just contacted me with a problem he is having on his laptop. He has Vista Ultimate and Office Professional 2007. This is what he sent to me:

"it looks like Microsoft Office 2007 has become currupt on my
computer, every time I try to open it, it tries to install even though
it was working fine just this last week, it then stops about halfway
through and I get this error:

Error 25004.Config.Xml not specified; A valid config.xml file must be
    authored when deploying '(null)'.

then It says: 'fatal error during installation' and then closes. "

Unfortunately, he is going to school in Florida and he forgot his Office 2007 CD here in California. My arm doesn't reach that far, so I was wondering if Vista System Restore (I assume that Vista still has that option) will restore Office, also? I suggested that he download and use OpenOffice until we can find a workable solution. What suggestions are out there?

Maybe. But that's something you can easily try, as you can always undo a system restore.

Arie, thanks for the information, but I guess it won't work. Here is what my son sent me:
"System restore resets every time a new program is installed,
and so every time I tried to open up Word, it would try to install and
so it set a new system restore without me realizing it. So now, there
are no old ones left because it wrote over all the old ones every time
I tried to open a program in office. "
I'm thinking that he may be able to go to the computer support lab @ Florida Tech and use one of their Office 2007 CDs to either repair or reinstall the program (using his product key). He has an academic license, but I assume that they don't change the program just for students. Any other suggestions that anyone might have?
    Thanks

No other suggestions. Have him try reinstalling office.
