    System Restore doesn'y

I was having some problems and decided to restore to a past date on which I had manually done a system save.

After all the churning and rebooting, I was told that nothing had been done because it could not restore from that point.

Tried 3-4 other points and had the same problem.

If XP doesn't detect anything to change, it gives you that response- can you go back further? What kind of problem are you having that you want to do a system restore?

I'm having a problem on a new computer that did not exist the first few weeks.

The system finds the DVD-RW drive but cannot read files on it, write or anything useful. The drive is working to the extent that if I put a bootable cd in there, it does its job. I was told by the computer tech guy, that some software install messed it up.

I want to restore back far enough so that it works so I can discover what software messed things up

Have you tried uninstalling the dvd/cd software and rebooting, and then reinstalling it? I suspect a SR might be of no use because it only fixes OS files, not software.

I got a surprise. I had not been able to do a directory on the DVD RW drive or read from it from windows.

I uninstalled two apps: EZCreator-6 that is supposed to work with DVD and SimpliCD which I didnt know about on DVDs

As soon as EZ was gone I could read the drive !! Bad News. Tried re-installing and the directory read was gone. Now I am going to re-install but NOT put in every feature. Gamble

There are known issues between easy cd creator and XP. Be sure to visit their web page for their fixes. But don't hold your breath. The updates don't always work, depending on the hardware and other software you use.

I must be missing something here. XP has CD burning abilities built-in. Why would anyone want to install 3rd party software?

I myself use Nero and have NO problem between it and XP.

I have made Boot disks. Copied CDs, Burned CDs. and use Re-writeables. all with no problems.

Used said CDs, ( other than re-writables ) on other machines and they all work fine.

I TRIED the other brand and had MUCHO many Problems. That was in 98SE so I did not even bother with it in XP.

When easy cd Creator is working in harmony with XP, it is so easy you could talk your grandmother through it, over the phone. When it is fighting with XP, it can bring a healthy system to its knees. Some of the burning software has options not available through WiMP (Like MMJB with its GraceNote tagging service) and some of the rippers are better (like Roxio's Easy CD)

How are ya liking XP Pro, so far, Shadowhawk?

No major complaints so far. I'm gonna get a Plextor 52x CDRW and will use XP's builtin CD burning software. Never again will I use Roxio's garbage.

Uh, I think you'll find that the XP built in stuff IS Roxio.

Before I upgraded my computer, I had been using EZ and SimpliCD with no problems. This new box however is a fast upgrade with one DVD/CD reader and one CD-RW/DVD-rw. I had trouble with EZ-5 and was told that I needed EZ-6 to be able to handle the DVD writer even if I was only using it to write CDs since EZ-5 didn't recognize DVD drives.

I have been testing. I installed EZ6 and was unable to do a directory of either CD/DVD drive and could not use SimpliCD. The puter kept asking me to put a disk in one or the other CD drive and would not recognize that I had done so with either a music, data or blank CD
I un-installed EZ-6 and SimpliCd worked fine and I was able to do a directory of the DVD-RW drive. I was also able to write to CD in that drive using SimpliCD. It does not have a CopyCD mode tho.
Put EZ6 back in and the same problem. I don't have it in now.

Note to Shadowhawk: The CD writing in XP is, I am told, minimal and EZ has a great many more options as well as a nicer audio player than WMP.

I don't care about options. I just want to be able to burn some custom audio CDs that'll work in a regular CD player. As for media players, I use only the best: IrfanView.

Easy CD Creator 5 is XP compliant providing you update it to I think 5.02 or 03 (check documentation on Roxio's site) Best to update to 5.3.5 and DO NOT install Take Two as it's incompatable with XP. EZCDC 6 has no major problems with XP.
If installing ANY third party burning programme it's advisable and, can be mandatory to deselect XP's (Roxio's) built in burning capability to avoid conflicts.
NEVER install two or more Packet writing applications such as DirectCD and InCD 'else packet writing won't work and system stability will be compromised.

Does XP include packet writing or just music CD burning?

Well, regardless of your statements about EZ being XP compliant, the version 5 was not DVD compliant in that it did not see the DVD drives. AND Roxio agreed with that so that is why I upgraded to version 6.

I did not expect the other side effects.

I have no argument about the XP compliance of EZ 5 without TakeTwo but Roxio agrees that 5 does not find the DVD drive and that is why I went to 6 - However I did not expect the side effects.

NOTE TO SHADOW ON A DIFFERENT SUBJECT
Why do you prefer your firewall to Zonelabs

Because I tried Zonelabs and it ended up taking me completely offline. I couldn't go online again 'til I disabled the firewall. Kerio has never given me a problem.

Paul, I just re-read the statement about EZ6 not having a major problem with XP

While I don't know the cause of MY problem, I would consider that after installing EZ6, I could not even do a directory of the CD in the drive and that the system keeps asking me to put a CD into the drive, even when i didnt ask for info on that drive, a MAJOR problem.
