As stated in the subject line. I have a lrage USB drive i move between many PC's. Most all PC have XP SP2 or W2003 Server. I have found that almost every time i plug the USB drive into a PC it adds it to the System Rstore drive list and enables it for like 12% of the drive. This bugs me and i wish once i have turned it off it would stay off, but no it keep getting turned back on some how on the protable drive.

Is there any way to disbale system restore on removable drives?

With the drive plugged in right click on My Computer icon > Properties > System Restors and turn off System Restore for the drive letter assigned to the USB drive. You will need to do this on all XP installs - no experience on W2k3.

If you have already done this to no avail the most likely cause is that a different drive letter is assigned each time you plug it in.

Should I let System Restore monitor my external drive? Note the rider :)

    Thanks Pete

I was hopping for a more permanent disable setting for external drive. I have assinged a drive letter and i though i had disabled it on all 4 PC's but i gues i had one of my other drive pluged in or my USB Stick and it must of had the same drive letter so the large drive then got a new letter.

So as your instructions stated use a higher drive letter i guess. Maybe i will set it to use only 1 meg for system restore and forget about it.

    Hello Rainey,

    It is annoying

You don't indicate the type of drive you're having the problem with.

My experience with flash drives is:

If you shut off Indexing Service, then when you plug the drive in, telling SR not to monitor the flash drive sticks. BUT, if you boot up with the flash drive plugged in, SR insists on monitoring the flash drive.

No trouble with regular ATA external drives - once monitoring turned off, it sticks and have Indexing Service disabled.

    Regards - Charles
