The default xp system restore points is 90 days and then it starts dropping the oldest each day as it adds a new one. It is also set (default)
to use 12% of your hard drive for this purpose.
I think this a way too much and should be changed.

I have decided to set mine at 1% of a 80 GB drive and limit the restore
points to 7 days. I have done this and it is working. DO NOT DO THIS UNLESS YOU ARE FAMILAR WITH MAKING CHANGES TO YOUR REGISTRY.
MAKE A BACKUP BEFORE YOU PROCEED!!!!!!!

    Following is what I did;

Restore for 7 days go to

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\current version\systemrestoreRPLifeinterval
edit and change to 93a80 (604800, which is the number of seconds in 7 days)
System Restore is set at 1% 1058 mb . I have 1GB of memory.

While the FIFO ageing default is 90 days, likely most users will never hit this as they have not allocated enough room.

Your disk allocation settings alone for System Restore would in all likeliehood have ensured that you will not even make seven days with your settings. I doubt any FIFO ageing is going to occur.

    Hello hawkeye,

Whether 1% is reasonable depends on the changes to the system between points as to how much room any particular RP takes up.

A re store operation creates a larger restore point and would use up the space rapidly. If a restore operation is done, first expand the space.

I would personally allocate 2% and I have Drive imaging to fall back on.

System Restore -how to change to 7 days

It is working with my settings
I have monitored and find 7 days with restore points and
on the eight day the oldest date is dropped off and a new date added
that is exactly what I want it to do, I have also tested by doing a restore and watching it grow back to 7 with the add/delete
I appreciate your interest and advice, however I am quite satisfied with the
current settings and action. If you have an 80 gb drive and 1 gb of memory as I have, try it.
This posting was made to show what is possible to others and not to seek changes to what I am doing
thanks for your interest and advice

    Hi hawkeye,

If it works for you, that's what important.

You obviously also know how to change it if you run into different conditions :)

    Regards - Charles
