I recently installed iolo's System Mechanic 9 and find that it works well for me. I also use Acronis True Image 2009 to create backups of drive C that are stored as .tib files on a Seagate external hard drive. I find that when analyzing system status, System Mechanic identifies the backup as significantly defragmented. However, attempts to defrag result in SM9 hanging and showing no progress after 30 or more minutes. Cancel also hangs indefinitely. Ctrl-Alt-Del, Restart and Shut Down are all ineffective, and the power had to be shut off. All other functions of System Mechanic seem to work properly, including defragmentation of drive C. I have contacted tech support at iolo today and await their answer next week. Does anyone know if there is some problem with defragmenting an external drive, or with .tib files? Thanks for any info.

Hi docbombay, I have the same situation occuring when I use the MS defragmenter that is built into XP's disk management. I have my Acronis backup files stored on an internal slave drive. It seems that for whatever reason the .tib files and a defragmenter do not get along. I don't think that it will cause you any problems to leave the disk alone, I know it has not caused any for me.

FWIW - Diskeeper 2009 on Win 7 has no problem defragmenting my Acrosis images on an internal drive. I do not recall any issues when running XP either.
