Downloaded and installed several Automated Updates this morning to my home XP system which required a reboot. During reboot the system made it to the windows desktop and then rebooted itself again. Made it to the desktop again, and again it rebooted and continues to do this.

Didn't have time to try to figure out whats going on as I had to get to work, so I forced a shutdown and will look at it tonight when I get home.

Anyone have any ideas on what may be causing this?

    Try this, it usually works.

    1. Boot your computer from your Windows XP restore/OS CD.

    2. When the menu comes up, hit the R key to get to the recovery prompt. (Unless you have a new HP in which case just press the F10 key during bootup)

    3. The prompt should start off at C:\Windows. Type "cd system32" (without the quotes), press the Enter key. The prompt should now read C:\Windows\system32

    4. Type: "copy userinit.exe wsaupdater.exe" (without the quotes), press the Enter key.

    5. Reboot

Just going to mention this as it just happened to me...

Got a call about one of the PC's at work constantly rebooting. Turned on the PC and as soon as got desktop the PC rebooted and rebooted and reboot...you get the idea. Sometimes though it would not even make it to the desktop before rebooting.

At doing numerous tests and "reseating of hardware" I found the problem to be the Power Supply (PSU). I replaced the PSU and all is well again...no more reboots unless initiated by user.

Thanks Miz and Dobhar for the replies.

Miz: Not sure exactly what the solution you suggested does, but tried it and it had no effect.

Dobhar: Should have said in my original post that I could boot into Safe Mode, so more than likely the power supply was not the issue.

I was able to rectify the problem this morning by going into safe mode and restoring the system to an earlier date and then rebooting. Thinking that I may have picked up a virus or spyware I then ran Norton Anti-Virus, Ad-Aware, Spybot, BHODemon, and HiJack This. All reported that my system was clean.

Knowing that the problem did not surface until I installed the MS Security Updates yesterday morning I decided to install them again, one at a time, rebooting between each update install. In doing so I discovered that the Security Update KB840987 was the culprit. All of the rest of other security updates which included; KB834707, KB841533, KB873376, & KB873376 installed just fine and had no negative impact on my system, but the minute I install KB840987 my system goes back into a continuous reboot.

In looking into this further I discovered that during install KB840987 adds a new item to the registry at HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run named KernelFaultCheck with the data value of %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -K. I've no idea what the purpose of this command is or what it does. Maybe someone could enlighten me??

In looking at Microsoft's Site for the KB8409087 update I noted that under the FAQ for Windows Kernel Vulnerability it states
Given my experience I'm wondering now if the cure is as bad as the disease?

At any rate, I've sent a Problem Report to Microsoft and for the time being I've marked this update as hidden so it can't be installed in the future.

    Hi,
Thought I would pass this along to you as an extra thought to keep in mind while you find ways to correct the problem. I just got called by an Insurance Company in the community to which I reside in because their computer kept rebooting and all they would get is a blue screen. In our conversation I discovered that they had Installed the Microsoft Service Pack 2 which I had prior knowledge would cause their screen to reboot continuosly and at some point it go to a blue screen indicating the "winserv" file is missing. If this problem sounds familiar and / or applies to your situation, a recovery console CD is needed. Trying to use Safe Mode to get in an hopefully uninstall the SP2 does not work...

    Master Green:

Thanks for the input, but I do not have SP2 installed, I've blocked it for the time being until the bugs get worked out of it.

It definitely was the Security Update that I mentioned in my earlier post that is causing the reboot loop, though why it is doing this is beyond me. I continue to wait for MS to respond.

    Thanks.

Thanks for the reply...The solution however for those who may or may not experience the SP2 winserv error message as stated in my post, Microsoft said that boot disks from the SP2 that can be placed on floppies is the right boot diisks to copy from Microsoft. They walked the Insurance Company thru it and all ended up fine.

    System ReBooting

Just hooked up a new Cicero 4 port USB 2.0 HUB
to rear USB JACK of a SOLTEK Mother board.

Hub installed OK and was usable.

There after computer would not shut down,
    kept rebooting.

Disconnect USB hub and all OK again.
