I have just installed Win2000 Pro on an old computer (P200 MMX, 128 MB RAM). Added Windows Printing System for Canon LBP 660, installed Word and Excel 2000, installed AutoCAD 14.

The computer, which with clean system was quite okay for such an old bucket, is abysmally slow. You type six-seven characters in Word, nothing happens, and then it spills them all toghether. Looked into Task Manager and saw that System (PID 8) has peaks of activity, from 0 to 99% of CPU.

Restarted the computer (and it took several inutes for it to reboot), everything was fine. Opened Word, everything went normally, speed of typing okay. Closed it, System does it again. Occupation of CPU cycles from 0 to 99% and back in about one second.

Anybody has any idea what happens?

Solved it by brute force: reinstalled Windows.

It appears that one of the programs damaged some Windows files during installation. Now everything works fine.

It's a moot point now but had I noticed your post in time I would have suggested that you check for and disable FindFast and then rename the file normal.dot as per this reference. There is mention there of virul infection so perhaps it's best you reinstalled.

All's well that ends well so perhaps next time the board will be able to give you some better service.

    Thanks for your feedback.
