    WinXp Home, SP2.

    Not sure if its system, hardware or software so will start here. Feel free to
    move if necessary.

    This may happen 5/10 times a day.
    Occasionally my system will "hang" for no known reason.
    Examples: using the mouse on the window scroll bar arrow to scroll down (or
    up), scrolling fine then for no reason it will stop scrolling.
    Re-clicking the mouse will start it scrolling again.

    Example2: When loading a program (any program) it will stop and require a
    mouse movement or mouse click to get the system going again.

    It appears to be like its losing the signal or running into a barrier that can be
    overcome by a mouse click, or mouse movement or clicking on a clear spot
    (de-activating the active window and then re-making it the active window).

    I have installed a new mouse, got rid of the wireless one but the problem
    still occurs. The system works fine except for this random problem and I'm
    not even sure where to begin checking.....

    Suggestions?
    Thanks,
    savagcl

    Addition:

    I looked in the event viewer and didnt see anything specific. I cleared the
    event, security, system logs and will keep a watch. When it happens again, i'll
    ckeck the logs and see whats there (will post here unless i can find a fix).

    System Hangs ?

    Hi,
    you have to see if some programs are running in background ! that EAT more of your RAM and make your system for "Optimized performance for application "

    :)

    ghemant,

    Here is what the startup (msconfig) shows and also the Task Manager.

    Startup utility:
    Acronis Scheduler2 service
    AVG7_CC
    AVG7_EMC
    AVG7_Run
    CHotkey (mHotKey.exe Multimedia Keyboard driver)
    gcasServ (MSAntispy)
    IntelliPoint (Mouse)
    ShowWnd (????)
    TrueImageMonitor.exe
    Zone Labs Client

    Following is from Task Manager:
    CPu usage = 0 to 2%
    PF Usage = 243MB

    Totals:
    Handles = 7548
    Threads = 500
    Processes = 38

    Physical Memory:
    Total = 1030776
    Available = range from 691300 to 691520
    System Cache = 363592

    Commit Charge:
    Total = 248796
    Limit = 2478360
    Peak = 447684

    Kernel Memory:
    Total = 80820
    Paged = 46380
    Nonpaged = 34464

    I dont think a lack of memory is the problem.

    Suggest you uncheck the following in the startup tab in msconfig:
    Acronis Scheduler2 service
    CHotkey
    IntelliPoint
    ShowWnd
    TrueImageMonitor.exe

    I use the logitek wireless keyboard and mouse and neither they or the monitor require drivers (although they are accompanied by driver CDs). Windows has its own scheduling service. and the other programs are not necessary at startup.

    If this eliminates your problem, fine. If not, you can easily turn back on any for which you feel a need.

    Addn: Have found that computers full of unnecessary files in the various temporary folders also have the slowing problem, which can act like your description because they seem to have to search through more stuff each time a program asks for information. So make sure your disk is as clean as you can get it.

    Hi Clif,

    Good advice by sparrow - turn those off - see if you get the problem, and if that does eliminate the symptom, then turn on one by one until you hit the culprit.

    Regards - Charles

    Hi Folks,

    I did as Sparrow suggested except for the intellipoint. I used to have a
    wireless mouse/keyboard but was burning up to many batteries. Went back to
    the intellipoint mouse but kept the wireless keyboard. The hangs was
    happening before all this tho.

    Will monitor what effect Sparrows suggestions have for a while. If still doing it,
    will continue this post (if fixed, will still post results).

    thanks,
    savagcl

    Hi,
    do as
    My Computer -> properties -> Advance -> Performance -> and then "Adjust for Best Performance" tooo
    sir , open Wor , power point or excel and see the memory occupation and then minimize it and see whats now in memory usage , you will see the difference between ,the same as while you have a program launched with System Starup it has a memory occupation and it will stays in your scratch memory so its better to remove those programs from startup.

    :)

    ghemant,

    My performance setting is in the control panel\system\advanced. I changed it
    to the performance setting.

    I dont have word, excel or powerpoint resident on my system. Needed those
    for work, not needed for retirement! :)

    thanks,
    savagcl
