I'm sure I've seen this discussed before - but now that I need it - I can't find it.

My system suddenly started hanging (hourglass) when I do a right mouse click on an icon (file, shortcut, my computer, etc) but not when I right click the desktop.

Control/alt/del tells me Explorer is not responding. I need to do a reset to get out of it.

I did nor install or uninstall anything - it just suddenly started doing this.

Running Win 98SE (problem free until now) totally up to date. Also McAfee (anti virus and firewall). Regularly scan with Spybot and AdAware. 512 megs of ram. HD barely half full.

    Any ideas ? - Thanks

    This

    May or may not fit.

I have had roughly the same problem with same fix on two machines.

Zander and Billy Bob (and Joe - hope he sees this) -

:) Thank you. The reference to the Explorer Shell problem pointed me in the right direction.

I was using a program yesterday (Eraser 5.7) that puts a command in the right click Explorer Shell. However, out of pattern for me, - I was using it to clear old zip discs I was tossing out. It was behaving a little oddly. Anyway - I think it must have corrupted something in the Explorer Shell.

I uninstalled Eraser, ran Reg Clean, removed the Eraser start up entry with Start Up Cop, ran IE6 repair from add/remove programs and then reloaded Eraser 5.7 with everything else turned off. (Seems like over kill - but until I did all of these - I was still having trouble)

I think the problem is solved - but ya never know until you use it for a couple of hours.

Thanks for the help. I love this place.

PS - It's easier to pry the zip drive open, pull out the media and cut it up!

Thanks for the feedback. At least now if it does give you trouble you'll know where to look. ;)
