Can anyone tell me what system file error 1026 is?

I am trying to remove or rename some files with weird names like _________|. or PO| or 8| and get a message that I can't move, delete, or rename them.

Also, in control panel I have no icon for system and tried renaming setup4.dll and setupx.dll and then extracting those files from CAB files to Windows\System but it didn't help. Right click on desktop and clicking properties does nothing. The window doesn't open that would normally allow you to change things like screen resolution or whatever.

    I need help gang.

    Thanks

oh yeah, I'm on W98 but not SE

    Hi sc3

You might take a look at this, but it sounds like
you have more problems than just the 1026 error.

You could try the System File Checker
by going to Start\Run and typing sfc and click OK.

I would also run Scan Disk (through option, and Automatically fix errors)
and scan the system for viruses. If you don't have an up to date anti virus,
you can do an online scan here.

We have had posts about such corrupted files before and deleting them in DOS. I will have a look back and you can do the same with the Search function.
    regards
