I ran System File Checker through the Start/Run and entered sfc /scannow . It started and asked me for my XP Pro disk and I inserted it. I then hit 'Retry' and the fun began. On second thought, it was not fun at all. It would run a little and then the dialog box asking for my XP Pro disk would appear again. While it scanned the files I must have hit the 'Retry' button about 70 or 80 times.

I assume this is not normal and would like to know how to prevent it next time I run SFC.

    Bad news Daniel,
It's normal. Great for RSI of the index finger :D
Unfortunately MS didn't give an option to "do not show this message again ". So yes it's fully interactive (and a great time waster) when you run SFC /Scannow. Consequently I use it only as a last resort now.

Their may be some parameter to do a "silent" SFC /scannow, but I'm not aware of it. If their is I'd be interested to hear.

That is not what I wanted to hear. :(

But if that is the only answer, I guess I am stuck with it. It just seemed strange that it would keep asking for the disk when it is already there.

Thanks for the quick answer anyway.

    Dan & Paul,
That's a new one on me. In all the times I have run sfc on many different computers, I have never had to keep telling it the disk was there. Dan, did you inspect the disk for any damage or dirt?

I looked, and I can't find any parameters for "silent" scanning.
    Parameters
    /scannow
Scans all protected system files immediately.
    /scanonce
Scans all protected system files once.
    /scanboot
Scans all protected system files every time the computer is restarted.
    /revert
Returns the scan to its default operation.
    /purgecache
Purges the Windows File Protection file cache and scans all protected system files immediately.
    /cachesize=x
Sets the size, in MB, of the Windows File Protection file cache.
    /?
Displays help at the command prompt.

Could be the PC is confused. I have the same results as Johanna - never stops to ask me anything.

Here may be the cause and a cure.

I have never even had to use sfc, so did it just now to see what happened. I was never prompted for the CD after the initial request. Clean the CD and the drive and if it still acts up, the info in that great link Newt provided (bookmarked) will probably fix you up.

I followed the instructions in the link you provided and ran the SFC. It ran without asking for the XP CD.

I did have to change two keys in the registery to C:\ as pointed out in the email at the end of the article.

    Thanks for the solution.

Thanks for the info at the updatexp site Newt. I've been pressing that **** enter key at least 50 times whenever I do a /scannow. Have been doing so for 2.5+ years, and even with an SP1 slipstreamed CD.
