    Hi Guys,

I'm a Mac user who needs some help with a PC.

Last year I bought a Jupiter Callisto Digital Video Recorder:
    http://www.jupisys.com/callisto.htm

It came with no CDROM drive, but does have a floppy drive.

It's basically a PC (see spec below) running Windows XP Home Edition. But the 80GB hard drive failed and I just replaced it with a brand new IBM/Hitachi 250GB hard drive. I also installed a Plextor CDRW drive (with the Windows XP CDROM in it).

But at boot I keep getting:
"Reboot and Select proper Boot device
or Install boot Media and in Selected Boot device and press any key "

Why doesn't it see the drives?

If I boot from a Caldera DR-DOS boot floppy it says "No CDROM drive detected" and "No hard drive detected "

I was finally able to get the disk utility to see the hard drive but it says it's only 137.44GB. Do you know why? Requires extended addressing drivers? Will XP see the full 250GB?

And if I use the disk utility on the boot floppy to test the new hard drive it says "Device not found" (Disposition Code 0x20).....even though it shows the drive connected to the computer!! And the utility only lists the hard drive, doesn't even see the CD drive.

Also, why doesn't the BIOS see the new CD drive (a Plextor PX-W5224TA)? Shouldn't it just boot off that so I can format the hard drive and install XP?

By the way, I also tried a new DVD drive (a LG GSA-4082B) in there....it doesn't see that drive either. Why?

Can someone offer me some guidance on how to get the system to see these drives...and getting XP installed and running?

I installed a lot of hard drives, but I think this is my first in a PC. Go easy on me (and slow)...I don't have a lot of experience with Windows...

    Thanks,
    Jeff-

    Thanks,
    Jeff Woodin

The CD-ROM is an add-on, so you will have to re-set the boot order in the BIOS to boot from the cd first. On my system, pressing the delete key on boot up brings up the BIOS. If the CD-ROM is in the Device Manager, then it should be in the BIOS.

EDIT: just took another look at your post. With the current OS, add the CD-ROM drive and make sure its in the Device Manager. That should be accomplished by the Plug&Play feature. In other words, the OS should detect the CD-ROM when it boots up.

I have no experience with the type of system you have - how far does it resembles a Desktop.

One more: Download and run Belarc - will give you sys info http://www.belarc.com/Download.html

    Hi Charles,

Thanks for the reply. When I hold down the Delete key and restart I get the MAIN screen that looks like below . On the right side of the screen it lists how to navigate the menues and screens....Tab, Enter, right arrow, up arrow, ect.

When I navigate to the "Boot Device Priority" menu all it lists is the floppy drive.

    Any suggestions?

BTW in the "PCIPnP" settings "Plug and Play O/S" is set to [NO]

....does that matter? Probably not since it ran XP before with it off.

Also, under "Advanced/USB Configuration" I enabled USB support (for 2 ports) but the system still doesn't see any devices connected to it.....i.e. my USB keyboard connected to the system via an IOGear MiniView III KVM (I have 3 other Macs connected to the KVM too....my main office Mac and two DP G4 database servers...I actually have a third G4 server I have to switch cables for when I'm not using the Jupiter Callisto....I already plan on buying an 8 port IOGear Miniview Ultra+ GCS1758 soon, supports both PS/2 and USB....I'm told the Callisto DVR prefers PS/2 to avoid any possible timing problems when its recording video from multiple cameras). The 8 port will be nice....my 4 Macs, the Windows/Pentium 4 Callisto....and 3 left for the future.....in fact I think I may already need another PC to run some things on. Glad PC's (and Macs) are so cheap these days! :) When I think what I paid for my IMSAI 8080 kit.....

Anyway, it also doesn't see a Kensington Orbit Optical trackball connected to the 2nd USB port....I love these Orbits! It just says "USB Devices Enabled: None" .....humm???

I also found out (using the setup utility) it's aPentium 4 @ 1.8GHz with 256MB of RAM.

    Thanks,
    Jeff

1st suggestion --> Have you tried running the "Jupiter" on it's own Mouse, Keyboard, and Monitor? Try removing it from the KVM switch.

2nd suggestion --> change the Plug and Play OS to "YES "

3rd suggestion --> Check the jumper settings on the Hard Drive and CD-ROM. Are you putting them on the same IDE ribbon cable? If so make sure they are setup for master \ slave. If on separate cables then make sure jumpers are set properly.

    Hi Kent,

    >>1st suggestion --> Have you tried running the "Jupiter" on it's own Mouse, Keyboard, and Monitor? Try removing it from the KVM switch.<<

I should clarify....I do have a PS/2 keyboard connected to it and am using that.....the video from the Jupiter does pass through the KVM Ok....just a little awkward being a distance from my monitor using the PS/2 keyboard. Just wish I knew why the Jupiter doesn't see the USB devices attached.

    >>2nd suggestion --> change the Plug and Play OS to "YES "<<

    I'll try it....

    >>3rd suggestion --> Check the jumper settings on the Hard Drive and CD-ROM. Are you putting them on the same IDE ribbon cable? If so make sure they are setup for master \ slave. If on separate cables then make sure jumpers are set properly.<<

Yes, they are on the same cable....that thought occured to me. I was avoiding taking it all back out if there was another solution (like a utility showing me what's on the bus and as what). Already cut up my hand getting it in there (all the drives mount on a single bracket) :) Oh well....where's the screwdriver? :)

    Thanks,
    Jeff

    Hi Jeff,

Glad you mentioned that - your additional hardware is not being detected on bootup - per dobhar's suggetion, turn it on. Makes no difference to the running of XP.

    Be sure to post back.

    Charles, Kent,

Well, I'm an idiot....the DVD drive was set to Master....changed that, booted up the BIOS Setup Utility.....there were both dives listed at Third IDE Master and Third IDE Slave.....

The boot order was floppy, hard drive then CD/DVD drive.....but I hit the Reset button and the Windows XP Setup program launched from the DVD drive.....

For some reason I had it in my head hard drives usually ship as masters, CD drives as slaves.....apperantly that's not right.

Well, lets see if I can get get XP installed......

Anybody know why the USB devices weren't seen by the BIOS? If you know please post....

    Thanks,
    Jeff

And I'll see if setting "Plug and Play O/S" is set to [YES] fixes the USB thing...

Well, I partitioned the drive into a 218GB partition and a 20GB partition and am formatting it now.....I'd like to install XP on both partitions so if the 218GB drive gets messed up I can boot up from the 20GB and make repairs to the 218GB if necessary. Not a problem, right?

I may also just install any PC apps on the 20GB and run them from there....leaving the 218GB system for strictly "video security duty" (which this machine will be doing 95% to 99.9% of the time).

I can have a system installed on both partitions and select what one I want to boot with right?

    Hi Jeff,

Yes, the install should create a boot menu.

One consideration - the boot.ini that the menu creates is always on partition C - so if something goes wrong w/ the boot menu itself, you'll need to boot your machine using the cd again - but, I've been dual booting for two years, so based on my experience, low probability and there are ways to repair.

Trying to get USB working....the Help window says to open the "Device Manager ".....but I can find no file called "Device Manager "????? Where is it?
....actually just found it by clicking on text in the help window to open it (but where is it normally found?)......it says my USB is working, but why doesn't it see or use my USB keyboard? Do I have to add a driver for this? I see no where to add it?

Also been trying to set up the connection to the local ethernet network and our broadband internet connection....I just go round in circles....it keeps wanting to "dial out "......???? It keeps thinking I want a dial-up connection. Where do you tell it "Just connect with a DHCP connection! "

Two+ hours wasted on this...what happened to "plug n play "?

    Thanks,
    Jeff

.....looks like the ethernet driver is not installed? And the install "wizard" says it can't find the diver on my XP CD!!! eeeeeeeee

This is nuts. Why wouldn't the XP installer install the driver for all the hardware in the system?

It could be because the card is to new. We just got some Dell Optiplex 2.4 GHz running an internal gigabit NIC card. When I first loaded XP the NIC (Intel Pro/1000 MT Netowrk Connection) was not found...I had to load the drivers and voila I now have a NIC. According to your first post you also have a gigabit card. You should have a 3com driver CD or maybe it's part of the motherboard CD. Check all the CD's that came with unit...if not go to http://www.3com.com/products/en_US/downloadsindex.jsp and put in your product number.

    1) Right-click "My Computer "
    2) Left-click "Properties "
    3) Select "Hardware" tab
    4) Click "Device Manager" button

I see that there is a USB Configuration section in your BIOS. Check to make sure USB is enabled.

    Kent,

Well, I got USB working. While trying to find out what the Ethernet hardware was I found 2 more USB ports on the back (4 total). So I went into the screen below and changed it from 2 to 4 ports...upon restart USB keyboard and Kensington USB Orbit trackball worked! I got a CD with the Orbit to add features, but it works as a mouse "emulator" without that installed.

I thought I turned on "Plug N Play OS" in the BIOS too when I set it to 4 port, went back to turn it off to see which setting enabled the USB...but I apperantly didn't save that change. So just setting it to 4 ports fixed it.

I was unable to find out the specs on the Ethernet, but it appears to be on a board mountd to the mother board with other I/O ports.

    In the BIOS:
    Onboard LAN [Enabled]
    Onboard LAN Boot ROM [Disabled]

I emailed Jupiter to see what the Ethernet hardware is.

.....also discovered you can use the Del key on the USB keyboard to boot up and use the BIOS Setup Utility....but it's iffy...sometimes it would load Windows. Guess when you press it at boot up is critical? Once [one time] it booted Windows and the USB didn't work [the other times it did]. But this is not a big issue...

Try running the free Belarc Advisor. The file size is only 605 kb so it will fit on a floppy that you can copy over to your Jupiter and run. It should give you details about your NIC.

    or

Try running Everest Home Edition. Unfortunately the file size is over 2 MB but if you have a burner you could burn it to CD then run it on the Jupiter.

Edit: Everest might be the better choice as it gives me the Model of my NIC and Belarc does not...it just gives me the type of NIC

So in Everest under the Network --> PCI/Pnp Network section.

You might need to turn on legacy USB keyboard support in the BIOS.

    Kent,

Downloaded both to my Mac then burned them to CD.....Everest is a handy program. Reports "3Comm 3C940 Gigabit LOM "

Also, just before I installed and ran that I installed XP on the 20GB [D:] partition. When booting now I'm asked which OS I want to boot....but both list as "Windows XP Home Edition ". Is there a way to tell which volume is selected (C: or D:) ? ....and after Windows boots is there a way to tell which volume booted? [...I can probably change the background screen, but how does the system tell you which booted?]

    Thanks,
    Jeff
