My computer config is as follows:

    AMD Athlon 64 X2
    2 GB DDR2 RAM
    ATI x1200 Series onboard VGA
    Viewsonic VA1912w monitor

    Windows Vista Ultimate 32 bit

My problem is that the computer would not remember the correct screen resolution of 1400x900. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. When it doesn't, I can't even see 1400x900 listed in Screen resolutions.

    Any ideas ?

Windows has resolution settings, but you should have an ATI graphics manager. Use the ATI program to make the settings.

You might not have the correct drivers. Do you know where they came from? If you have upgraded the drivers, I suggest going back the original ones supplied with system. I would uninstall the current ones, there should be an ATI listing in Control Panel -> Programs and Features. If you have any problems when you restart, go to the Startup Options menu (F8) and select Low Resolution mode, run the driver installer when you reach the desktop. The other place I would look for drivers is at the motherboard manufacturer's website. I don't get drivers from Windows Updates because the drivers (or graphics manager software) might be "special ". I don't know if they have improved but WU's would update the drivers only, if the software didn't match, the graphics could possibly stop working.

    Thanks for the reply mattman.

I don't use ATI graphics manager so I can't use it.

This problem occurs both with the manufacturers supplied drivers on the cd & with the drivers downloaded from ATI. I don't use Windows Update to update my drivers because as you rightly pointed out, there could be a mismatch between the hardware & the drivers.

I am not sure what you mean. If you have the ATI Catalyst™ Control Center installed, I am saying you should use that to make the settings.

Oops. I should have said "not installed ".

Finally some good news. I found that the video cable was loose from monitor side. I have tightened it & so far the monitor is behaving itself. Would revert back in 2-3 days.
