My laptop crashed tonight after I cleaned a bunch of adware off of it. I went and reset the laptop and now I can not even get back in using safe mode. It tells me that my Config.sys is missing or corrupt. I have the original restore disk, but that will re-format my hard drive. I need to get most of my data off of the hard drive 1st before I do that. Can someone give me an idea which way I can go with this?

    Thanks

I think the second article you posted requires a full copy of XP and an OEM or Restore CD will not suffice?

Oh yea... probably, as the recovery console won't be available on the restore CD. Lesson: Never ever buy a system when you only get a 'restore' CD

He can still try and use the other computer to defrag and run a checkdisk on the laptop drive. I have found that in most cases this works. He will need the cable to do that.
