XP won't launch and Safe mode, Reboot, etc. options loop back to error screen. Recovery tells me System 32 file is missing but all original disks are also missing. Can I install System 32 file from a different computer's XP disk? Will a recovery disk from Live Boot fix this problem? Thanks for your help.

Hi flohall. What is the full error message that you get when you boot up the computer?

Do you have a Windows XP CD that is the same Service Pack as the the one that is installed on the computer?

If you don't have a Windows XP CD then download the Windows XP Recovery Console ISO file from here.

Then download and run Active ISO Burner to burn the ISO file to a CD.

Once you burn the ISO file to a new blank CD, boot the computer from the CD. Once the computer can boot from the CD let me know and we will go from there.

Thanks Evan. I only have access to someone else's computer once a day. I will go back to mine and copy the full message. My computer is 8 or 9 yrs old and can't find any of the original documents. I'll be getting a new one for Mother's Day but want to fire up the old one to get some files and wipe it clean afterward. So, I will follow your advice and get back to you tomorrow.

Evan, I have a new computer with Windows 8 (ugh) after no tips for my XP worked - even using an original XP Recovery disk. Staples has the old hard drive to download whatever files can be recovered so I can add to my new system. Thanks for your help - it is really appreciated.
