When the Preferred DNS server is not available in Windows 7 it switches automatically to the Alternate DNS server.
If the Preferred DNS servers becomes back online Windows doesn't switch backt to it.
Is there a tool or a script that can let me switch manually between the Preferred DNS server and the Alternate DNS server?

Disabling & enabling network would force the change but why do you want to do it ?

My Preferred DNS server points to a local BIND DNS Server (with local Intranet entries as well as Root Internet entries).
But sometimes when I boot my workstation the server is not up yet and the Alternate DNS server has been chosen. The Alternate DNS server obviously doesn't know the DNS settings for my Intranet network.
When I remove the Alternate DNS server settings all works well (local Intranet DNS entries as well as Internet entries); but I would like to keep the Alrenate DNS settings so I tought if I could switch the DNS settings whenever I want I should work fine.

The DNS entries should be normally handled by your DHCP server & not in your individual workstation.

Seems like you are the admin out there. Boot the server before booting up the workstation(s) & let your DHCP server handle DNS, IP, WINS etc. Better for you sanity. :D

I couldn't agree with you more than that it would be better for my sanity, but I think I have found the solution in the netsh tool:

netsh dnsclient set dnsservers name= "Local Area Connection" source=static address=<ip address of the the local DNS Server>

    thanks for all the help.
