    anybody know what the difference between a managed and unmanaged switch is?

    Apart from the cost ! :)

    Pretty much what it says, unmanaged you cant do anything with, managed switches have some sort of console (usually web based these days but may be Telnet) that allows you to set parameters on the switch such as

    speed
    duplex
    VLANs etc etc etc
