Hi, i've been experiencing problems with my svchost.exe
each time while gaming on my laptop, my svchost will take up 50% or more of my memory according to my task manager causing it to lag.
And once i end the process, it stops lagging but my laptop will go haywire telling me that my soundcard isn't installed, which is not the case.
Any suggestions on how i can stop the lags?

How much ram do you have installed? 50% is a hugh number.....I currently have six svchost.exe running and they don't take up more then 10%...

Do you reboot the machine everyday?

    Hi jAsOs

SVCHOST can run many times are you saying you have only one entry?

SVCHOST can also run many processes within a single entry.

The below will only work if you have XP Pro. If you have XP Home get back to us to make it work under XP Home.

To see what svchost is running hidden from you copy the text between the lines but not the lines.

    ----------------------------------------------------------
    %SystemRoot%\system32\cmd.exe /c %windir%\system32\tasklist.exe /svc > "%USERPROFILE% "\Desktop\Tasklist.txt
    ----------------------------------------------------------

    then
    Start-Run
    type cmd
    hit enter or click OK

rt click in the open cmd screen and rt then paste
    hit enter twice
    close cmd prompt

Now there is a new icon on the desktop Tasklist.txt.

This will show what each svchost is running.

Post it back to us and we may can help.

    Mike

Hey Mike, below is the list of the processes controlled by the svchost

    svchost.exe 1144 DcomLaunch, TermService
    svchost.exe 1236 RpcSs
svchost.exe 1276 AudioSrv, BITS, Browser, CryptSvc, Dhcp,
    ERSvc, EventSystem,
    FastUserSwitchingCompatibility, helpsvc,
    HidServ, lanmanserver, lanmanworkstation,
    Netman, Nla, RasMan, Schedule, seclogon,
    SENS, SharedAccess, ShellHWDetection,
    srservice, TapiSrv, Themes, TrkWks, w32time,
    winmgmt, wscsvc, wuauserv

should i wait till it starts lagging then only i copy the command in there and post the svchost that's causing the lag?
