    hi,
I have just downloaded Zone Alarm on my computer. Whenever i get onto the internet it ask for permission to let svchost.exe access the internet. If i said deny will that affect my pc in any way( XP-Pro ).

    Thanks,

svchost.exe is a valid process, but I don't believe it needs access. Mine doesn't have it, and I don't remember ever being prompted to allow it. I think you should use tasklist to see what is being used. Details for use can be found in this thread. If you have questions about any of it, you can copy/paste the results here. From a command window, click the little C:\ prompt at the top left of the window and select edit>mark. Use the mouse to highlight the text and edit>copy. Then just right click and paste here.

If you're not on a network, you don't need to allow svchost.exe to access the internet. You can permit it, if you want, too, it is a valid MS process, and won't hurt anything.

    Hi bostonaj!

I'm on XP-pro and I'm not sure it will work on XP-home:

Click Start > Run > type: cmd > click OK

In the command window type: tasklist /svc (including the space between tasklist and /svc) > hit enter

Now You can see several instances of svchost.exe and which services run under each instance.

I don't know if they will mean anything to You, I personally need help to decipher what it really is.

When finished, type: exit > hit enter
