Hi. I am running XP Pro on a Pentium IV, 3 GHZ Dell machine with 512 MB ram.
Regular apps have been slow today, especially Windows Explorer and Excel, when opening small files. I run Trend Micro PC-Cillin with daily updated virus defs. Now I have closed ALL apps and when I look at Processes in Task Mgr, I see, among other things, 6 instances of SVCHOST.EXE running. What is it? And why so many instances? I won't kill it unless I know what it is. Thanks all. --GG

    I counted 9 a few minutes ago.

    Now I only see 6.

Windows Xp uses that file to run your Services, as a Host. You'll see one for each active windows service.

On my computer, a number of services are running under each instance of svchost.exe. Go to Start > Run > type: cmd > ENTER > type: tasklist /svc > ENTER to view a list of what is running.

    Hello Greg,

Typing tasklist /svc > c:\tasklist.txt will create a .txt file, open with notepad.

    Regards - Charles

Charles and Christer: Your suggestions worked, if only to satisfy some of my curiosity, thanks.

Greg Golden--As as you can see from tasklist, one instance of svchost.exe can often open more than one service.
