From what a read, this is could be caused by left over entries in your registry. Either try running a registry cleaner to get rid of it (I don't recommend this), I'd try running a repair install, although I doubt that'll 'fix' it.

Which Registry Cleaner or repair install, please? You say you do not recommend the registry cleaner; what will a registry cleaner do & what is the risk?

Generally speaking I would avoid using Registry cleaners on a regular basis, just on a one-off basis for specific problems.

I suggest using the 30 day uncrippled trial of jv16PowerTools, run the Registry Cleaner and accept the option to backup the changes it will make.

As you can restore the changes the risk is low.

I ran the jv16PowerTool. It did not suggest or offer backub, but I did click on the backup option & it showed nothing that was backed up. I do not know what to do or expect at this point. I will restart my computer to see if the error msg is still there. It says that my PC Health is 97%; and that my Registry Health is 86%.

When you run the Registry Cleaner applet in jv16PowerTools you are presented with a list of 'errors' When you Select All and click on Fix you are given the option to back up first.

Did you actually select the errors to be fixed and hit Fix?

    Create fresh restore point.

Download, and install CCleaner: http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds. Get "Slim" version.
Run both parts, regular cleaner and registry cleaner.
Normally, I don't recommend registry cleaner, but....CCleaner is the only registry cleaner I'd use, if I had to.

Pete, I did not see any errors listed or options for selecting all for anything. on the left there is icons for Registry Tools, File Tools, System Tools, Privacy Tools, Backups, Settings & then it gives the PC Health (97%) & the Registry Health (86%). At the top is Live Support Online & Handbook & above that in the menu bar: File, Language, Shortcuts, Tools & Help. In the middle there are icons for Registry Manager, Registry Finder, Registry Find & Replace. Registry Cleaner, Registry Compactor, Registry Information & Registry Monitor. Thats all that's there. Should I be clicking on one of these?

    CCleaner

    Broni,
I ran the regular & the registry cleaners; the problem of the svchost.exe-application error still exists. However, it did allow me to see what programs are runnig @ start-up & I was able to delete the VTech components that were left over afer I removed that program from Add/Remove Programs from some time ago, so that issue's been resolved ( "IMLiveUpdate component 'MSWINSCK.OCX'') & it no longer attempts to run or load when I start or re-start my computer.

I did not do a fresh restore point because I did not know what date to use.

OK, Pete; thanks. I ran it & all the errors were checked; I did click fix & accepted backup as well. I tried to save the results as a text so I could send to you, however it did not save the information that showed in the results. I believe it only indicated there were 34 errors & they were all fixed. I restarted my computer & the error msg is still there.

Go Start>Run (Start Search in Vista), type in:
    msconfig
Click OK (hit Enter in Vista).

    Click on Startup tab.
    Click Disable all
IMPORTANT! In case of laptop, make sure, you do NOT disable any keyboard, or touchpad entries.

    Click Services tab.
Put checkmark in Hide all Microsoft services
    Click Disable all.

    Click OK.
    Restart computer in Normal Mode.

NOTE. If you use different firewall, than Windows firewall, turn Windows firewall on, just for this test, since your regular firewall won't be running.
If you use Windows firewall, you're fine.

    Same problem?
