Future of the Mozilla Application Suite: No Official Mozilla 1.8, Community Transition Plan Unveiled

The Mozilla Foundation has published its Mozilla Application Suite transition plan, ending days of speculation about the future of the SeaMonkey project. The announcement confirms that there will be no official Mozilla 1.8 release and offers an apology to all those who believed that there would be. The 1.7.x line will be the last set of Mozilla Application Suite products released and maintained by the Mozilla Foundation and all future suite versions from the Foundation will be minor updates only.

However, the Mozilla Foundation will offer infrastructure support to a community effort to continue development of the Mozilla Application Suite, probably under a different name.

Forgive me for asking this question here (as well as "somewhere else "), Ramona. About a week ago I installed the 1.8 beta. Now that it appears it will never reach a final version, would you advise my uninstalling it and returning to 1.7.5 (which I use as my secondary browser) or just leaving it as is?

    James,
1.8 is a beta, and as such should have be kept in a secondary position. I did not install it, but work from the unzipped version. Any other final version of Mozilla or Netscape or Firefox should be primary, or default.
You can keep 1.8beta, as long as you have a dedicated profile. I hope that you were not sharing profiles. If you used the same profile for 1.8 and 1.7.5, but did not use 1.7.5 during this time, I wish you good luck. You may be ok, but no flip flopping. In doubt, uninstall.

Well... I did use 1.7.5, Westside. I uninstalled it some time back but kept the profile intact since I wanted to retain my bookmarks and so forth. I then installed 1.8b. Now... so far 1.8b has been fine. I'm thinking that it may be best to just leave it alone since I only use this suite periodically and after all... what is the point of risking problems if I try to partially uninstall it for 1.7.5? What could I possibly gain?

    James,

I have found 1.8b1 to be stable, altho it isn't my default browser, Firefox is the default. I would download and archive Mozilla 1.7.5 for posterity, which is what I just did, both the Zip and the exe installs. If you're having no problems with 1.8b1, and I'm sure you aren't sharing a Profile, then I don't see a problem with keeping it installed.
