    Hi.

I don't know much about computers, except that they're great when they work properly. I use mine mostly for researching family history, but if I go to a favourite site and do a search, a list of hits is given. When I select one and read it, and then click the 'Back' button to go back to the hit results, I get the infamous Page Cannot Be Displayed screen. If I click again it goes back to the blank search request page.

It's also happened on this site, looking for similar queries.

This has only started to happen in the past week, and it might be coincidence, but there was a problem with the CD-ROM R/W which is currently disabled.

The error page doesn't seem right either. Apart from the bright blue letter 'I' in a dog-eared sheet of paper, the page is monochrome.

I've run updated AVG and ADAWARE scans but the problem persists.

My system is Windows XP Home with SP2, IE6 and OE6, using ZoneAlarm.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

    Colin

Sorry, but I forgot to mention that I tried 'System Restore' to over a week ago, and it's still happening.

Can you get the cd r/w to work? In Control Panel> System> Device Manager, locate your cd r/w and uninstall it, reboot and let XP "find" it again. Update drivers if you can, even looking at the manufacturer's website, if necessary. If you can get around that problem, this might fix your lack of "back" issue in IE:

If you have your XP cd, try an SFC
    Start > Run > cmd > sfc /scannow

Before you run the SFC, clean out all temp files and make sure the "days to keep pages in history" is more than 2. Couldn't hurt to just toggle it to another number, just to make sure it resets.

Thanks for the help, Johanna, it now looks as though the problem is solved.

I think the problem with the CD R/W is a mechanical one, rather than a system problem. It's OK for an hour or so but gives a couple of clicks and dies, even though it hasn't been used. I haven't got round to replacing it yet, so I just disable it to keep the system stable.

I re-installed it as you suggested, but no change to the error problem, so I deleted temp files and changed history from 20 to 15 days and that seems to have fixed the problem :D :D :D

I thought I had it set up to delete temp files at logoff, obviously not, but then again, what do I know

Many thanks from a very happy fan,
    Colin
