    Hello all!

When I tested J2RE 1.4.2_07 it was said to not be the most recent version and JRE 1.5.0_01 was recommended. I uninstalled the previous and installed the recommended.

Under the General Tab > Temporary Internet Files > Settings > the cache size is set to unlimited. I think that is out of proportion, considering that I have limited the cache in IE and FF to a few MB.

What do the experts have to say on this? Is more than a few MB called for?

    Thanks for Your time,
    Christer

Christer--No expert, and I am responding to your first sentence, not the question you asked about cache.
My understanding is that 1.4.2_07 is the latest version of JRE for everyday users and 1.5.0.1 is the latest version for developers. If you enter the sun.com site and casually follow the links to JRE you will be offered 1.4.2_07.

    Hi Jim!

When I go to java.com I now get the message > YOU'VE GOT THE LATEST!

When I click Manual Download and Windows (Offline Installation) Download I 'm offered jre-1_5_0_01-windows-i586-p.exe

On Download Java 2 Platform Standard Edition 5.0 it is labeled "JRE 5.0 Update 1 / includes the JVM technology / The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications." Note that they say END-USERS, not developers!

On Download Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition, v 1.4.2 (J2SE) j2re-1_4_2_07-windows-i586-p.exe is offered and it too is labeled for END-USERS!

Anyway, when I had j2re-1_4_2_07-windows-i586-p.exe installed, I was prompted to upgrade to jre-1_5_0_01-windows-i586-p.exe

Which route does take You casually to J2RE 1.4.2_07? ...... ...... I had to work a bit to find it!

Christer--OK, so wrong again. Have not been there for a month or so, but last time I went to www.sun.com (not www.java.com) I was offered 1.4.2_07 even though I had 1.5.0.0 installed. Now when I go to www.sun.com and click on the "Java Technology" link I am directed to http://www.java.com/en/ and told that I "Have the latest ". So it would seem Sun has finally graduated from 1.4.2_07 to version 1.5.0.01 for everyone. No explanation why http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html still offers the 1.4.2 series. Or why http://java.sun.com/j2se/ offers a choice.
Sorry. Serves me right for butting in.

    Jim,
don't be sorry for butting in ...... ...... that's what we're here for!

We are actually clearing up a few misunderstandings which are due to Sun's inconsequent naming and the fact that there are two websites offering their software.

    Maggie,
it is confusing but as I understand it from A Roadmap for Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition (J2SE) 1.4.2 and 1.5 and a few other webpages, when they went from J2SE 1.4 to J2SE 1.5 they also started talking about J2SE 5.0.

J2SE 5.0 is what we get when we download jre-1_5_0_01-windows-i586-p.exe !

    Bumping/reviving this question:

I have set the TIFs to a maximum of 0 (zero) MB and unchecked the option under "JAVA applets" to not activate caching. It seems to be running OK but would it run better using a cache?

I don't see the JAVA icon in the notification area that often and I would assume that my settings neccesitates downloading of the JAVA applets each time they are needed. Being connected via 10 Mb/s broadband, that shouldn't be a problem but on a dial-up connection, caching would be a good thing.

    Right or wrong?
