On July 12 I downloaded and installed Sun Java Runtime Version 1.5.0_07. Today, I visited the site to check for a more recent version but was surprised to find version 1.5.0_06 to be on offer. Does anyone know why version 1.5.0_07 has been withdrawn?

In my control panel, add/remove programs, I have..

    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6 119.00MB and

    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 8 119.00MB

Do I need to keep both or download another version?

I always uninstall (through add/remove) the previous version before installing the new one.

In your case, somewhere in Java setup, you should be able to choose either but I believe it defaults to the latest install.

You can which version of Sun's Java you have by clicking here
    http://www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml
I put this site into Trusted Zones in order to make it work.
The latest version of the J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 is still Update 6
It is the JavaTM 2 Platform Standard Edition Development Kit 5.0 which is Update 8

Well, I finally found where to get Update 8
    http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
This leads to the actual download page when you click Download under "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 8 "
(There is no purpose for me to provide the URL for the actual download page since you cannot get there without agreeing to Sun's licensing terms first.)

This is all a bit weird. I run jucheck.exe which is supposed to tell me when a new version is available. It and the "Verify Installation" page as suggested by Christer indicate that my Update 6 is the latest version. But I seem to be two versions behind based on the above download page.
Also jre-1_5_0_08-windows-i586-p.exe has no Version tab, whereas jre-1_5_0_07-windows-i586-p.exe does.

    ... and it has a different icon ... ... !

No matter what, Sun needs to get their act together. I have disabled the automatic update feature because it has not once alerted me to a new version. Neither does the "verify thingy" do its job very well. Everyone seems to be up-to-date no matter which version is installed.

Is it possible that there has been problems with _07 and _08 which has prompted a rewind to _06? That would make the download location of _08 that Jim found an oversight on Sun's part. If _08 is good to go, then we should get it by means of automatic updates (for those who have it enabled) or a visit to the "main page" of their site. We should not have to dig as deep as Jim did. Maybe someone with fat fingers made a mistake when _08 was released and changed the link from _07 to _06 instead of to _08?
