    Hello all!

    In october, I downloaded jre-1_5_0_09-windows-i586-p.exe from http://www.sun.com/download/

At the same time, jre-1_5_0_07-windows-i586-p.exe was the most recent version available at http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

Today, I went to check at http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp and found jre-1_5_0_09-windows-i586-p-s.exe to be available. (Note the highlighted s!) I downloaded it to my hard disk (like I always do).

I never installed 09 in october but now I thought it was the right time (don't ask why). The first thing that happened was that the FireWall notified me of Macromedia ... blah ... blah ... wanted access to the web and I was recommended to allow. I did so and while I was wondering why this had not happened before there was a new screen offering to install Google Toolbar. There was a box to uncheck which I did and proceeded with the installation.

Does anyone know if that is the reason for the web connection during an installation from the local hard disk or is it me who have missed the connection on previous similar installs?

    Thanks for your time,
    Christer

I restored a Ghost Image created prior to updating to 09. I installed jre-1_5_0_09-windows-i586-p-s.exe, disconnected from the web and I did not see any trace of Google Toolbar. It seems like the installer connects to the web (if possible) to check if GT is present or not. If not, GT is offered.

I check and saw I still had 1_5_0_08 so I went and grabbed the Online download. It shows as jre-1_5_0_09-windows-i586-p-iftw.exe. There was no Google Toolbar option shown. I had gotten rid of the Google Toolbar after that last deal with it automatically updating and trying to insert itself in my firewall.

Christer--Interesting and mystifying. I have the original Java update9 .exe from October. No "s" is mentioned.
Now, why should an offline install of Sun's Java want permission to access Macromedia (owned by Adobe)? As you know when you click to install Flash Player (on the Macromedia site), you have to be careful not to also install the Yahoo Toolbar.
If you look around the Java site you will come across this
    http://www.java.com/en/download/help/5000012600.xml
That suggests they know something is causing Google Toolbar to install.

Whiskeyman-- jre-1_5_0_09-windows-i586-p-iftw.exe is the Online installation file. Christer's is the Offline installation file. I think Offline means you save the file to hard disk and run from there--not that you have to be offline. But Christer has shown there might be a benefit of Offline installation.

    Jim,
I have always downloaded to my HDD, just to have the installation file handy but have never disconnected from the web while doing the install. With jre-1_5_0_09-windows-i586-p-s.exe it's the first time that I have noticed Google Toolbar (GT) "bundled" with Java. jre-1_5_0_09-windows-i586-p.exe does not have it.

A while ago, we discussed why jre-1_5_0_09-windows-i586-p.exe was available at the download site but jre-1_5_0_07-windows-i586-p.exe at the main site. My conclusion was that neither 08 nor 09 was significant enough to push out to everyone but now it seems like GT is ... ... !

We need to be careful not to install everything without checking what comes in the package. I have never heard of anything bad regarding GT but Yahoo Toolbar is a different box of tricks (I have heard).

I just looked and saw the difference between the downloads.

Christer did you use IE to download and install the Java update? Maybe because I used Opera to download I wasn't offered the Google Toolbar option.
