Ok Here is the gist of what I am trying to find a utility similar to Intels processor ID utility, but one that may suggest a processor upgrade!

Reason : I recently had a laptop that I thought was Dead?? well I had a look at the processor, & opened up the top of my wifes laptop & find that the processors are inter-changable so I put the better processor in hers, ok mistake :( she won't lret me change it back , now I would like to upgrade the processor in this laptop And a couple of others that I have here, but when I read sl7???, sl8??? I get confused

    Any suggestions are greatly appreciated
    Regards Jac

PS the laptop mostly in question is a Acer Extensa 2300, originally had a Celeron M 1.5ghz now has a 1.3 in it

I can find nothing on an Extensa 2300 - are you sure that is not a TravelMate 2300? The TravelMate 2300 user guide (not easy to find either - :() says it will support the following CPUs,
    Intel® Pentium® M Processor 705, 715, 725, 735, 745, 755, or
    Intel® Celeron® M Processor 320, 330

    Thanks Bill,
have found all the downloads on the Austrialian site, but nothing to let me know what upgrades it will allow, I'm currently having drama's with a samsung 160GB drive which it will only allow me to run at 129 instead of the the proported 156.25 (1024 = 1), against (1000 = 1) it will recognise as 149 if I format with Acronis (seagate disk-wizard I am running a 40gb Seagate as back-up till I get it sorted ), but it will lose 21gb if I add more than 2 partitions??????????????????????????????????
Thanks for your help I will do some more research & possibly place a new post inregards the HDD
    Regards Jac

I'm afraid I can't help you - you have not cleared the confusion over the model number, and did not acknowledge the list of compatible CPUs I gave for my best guess, the TravelMate 2300.

There are no 3rd party programs that can tell you what CPU upgrades your specific computer can accept. The only thing close would be brand specific. For example, if you have an Acer notebook, you could visit Acer. Some makers have "proprietary" programs that access your computer and their "existing" database for your computer, then tell you your upgrade options. For others, you just select or enter your model number through their menus options.

The database required for a 3rd party program to keep track of every version of every motherboard, every CPU, every chipset, and every BIOS in the nearly 1 billion Windows computers in the world today, AND the compatible combinations - then keep it current, would be a monumental task and hardly worth it when you can do what I did, and go out to the maker's site and look it up in a couple minutes.

As for the HD issue - general good forum etiquette is "new problem, new thread ".

    Hi Again,
On the Acer Australian site, in Support & Downloads The Model comes up as a Extensa 2300, on the base of the unit it is a Extensa 2303WLM.
Sorry about the new thread suggested, as I was thinking out loud while I was replying to your post.
Yes I do agree that it would be nearly impossible to keep up with a utility like I was hoping to find, thanks for the help and I will have another look at Acer for suggested upgrades.
    Regards Jac
