If you're using XP, right click on my computer and choose properties. Click the advanced tab and then the settings button where it says startup and recovery. Then under system failure, uncheck the line that says automatically restart. I don't know if this is what's happening or not, but if it is, you'll get an error message instead of the computer restarting and we'll have a place to start from. If you do get an error message, be sure to include it if you post back. This problem could also be hardware related but being that you referred to this computer as being brand new, I think you should first eliminate the possibility of a software problem. Again, if this is XP, have you checked your event viewer to see if there's anything related to the problem in there?
