I am using the Backup Utility on Windows XP Home Edition.

When attempting to back up System State, my computer suddenly reboots in the middle of the process, leaving me with a partial backup file.

Hi Sid. Welcome to windows help.

We will need more information about exactly what is happening prior to and maybe during the crash/reboot. Two possible good sources for the information are the event logs and a BSOD with information.

Event logs will be the easiest so do the following:

    - right-click on My Computer and left click on Manage.
    - click the + sign by Event Viewer to expand it. You should see 3 sections. Right click on each and clear the event logs. Makes it easier to find the problems with all the clutter removed.
    - try your backup and after the PC reboots, check each of the logs for warning or error messages. If you see error/warning events that look like they are related to the problem - or events that just don't make sense to you, post them here. Easiest way is
... open an event then click on the icon below the up/down arrows to send a text copy to your clipboard.
... open a reply here and paste the event into it. If you have more than one, just do the same with each and paste the results here.

To hopefully get a BSOD with information, you'll need to change a setting so the PC stops on the error and does not automatically reboot.

    - right-click My Computer and click on Properties~Advanced~Startup & Recovery. In the System Failure section, uncheck the Automatically Restart box.

If this produces a blue screen at next crash, you'll need to copy down ALL the information at the top and it has to be exact. Then type it in a reply here.

    Thanks Newt!

I followed your instructions, but when I tried my backup today, it was successful. I had several consecutive failures yesterday.

Should I have a repeat experience (likely, based on past history), I will try to capture the information on an event log for your review.
