Hi everyone. A bit of a mystery going on with my XP Pro PC. Please bear with me, I'm in the dark as to when the problem actually occurred. I had left the computer in a fully functional state. Went to work and ended up getting injured, hospital, etc. Long story short, the computer was shut down, dismantled and brought into the main living area of the house so I could still use it. Upon starting up I found there is no sound.

The computer is an HP, the monitor is a Sony with built in speaker. I do get sound in headphones direct from the tower, from both the front headphone jack as well as the rear jack that goes to the monitor. At first I suspected either the cable had gone bad or perhaps some setting was accidentally changed during the move. Checked all settings (mute, levels, speaker settings, etc), checked the actual monitor settings, looked for driver updates, tried to roll back the driver, and finally attempted to restore to when I still had functional sound -- no luck.

After a day or two of trying to figure it out, I received a generic win32 error message and in doing some research it was said that on occasion it causes problems with a system's sound card. Needless to say, I'm very frustrated.. Just went though a whole cleaning process to resolve the win32 problem but the lack of sound has me considering a system recovery.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Your time is greatly appreciated. :) Thanks!

Which indicates that there is nothing wrong with the sound on the computer and a System Restore is most unlikely to do anything.

You have checked the monitor for a speaker switch? I recall a Sony Trinitron CRT that I used some years ago - still have it somewhere - which had (awful) onboard speakers and that had a button included in the display settings buttons for muting the speakers. If you have the monitor manual check it out.

It would have been very easy for that to have been pressed in transportation.

Hi Pete. Yes, I've checked all along the monitor. It is a combo computer/television display, so it has a display menu button right along the side where I'd imagine it was grabbed. That was my first thought, that something got hit and was somehow muted, however I've done full display audio resets on the settings with no restoration of sound.

I don't have the manual on hand at the moment but I will see if I can look it up online. The model is Sony MFM-HT95, if anyone's familiar with it.

Problem resolved. There's a second audio jack that's almost impossible to feel and IS impossible to see, but I was able to figure it out with the manual close ups. Thanks wildfire!
