I had a bad virus/malware (antispyware 2010) thingy, I used malwarebytes, spydoctor and others, eventually the viurus was gone (i thought).

I could no longer connect to my wireless. I assumed something was deleted maybe a driver etrc. So, I decided to do a fix/upgrade XP install. My laptop came with the OS installed so I got a burned XP pro disk and tried to do the update install.

It only got so far and now it is stuck with 39 minutes left. The messages I am getting are first to insert the xp pro service pack 2 cd. I went online burned the files to disk and when inserted it works and then says that NT5Info.cat file is missing.

There is no file in the i386 folder with that name there are 2 that are NT5Info.ca_ and 1 that is NT5.ca. I even tried changing the name of the files to .cat at the end (i read that in another forum),all to no avail. I even got the service pack from another source and it had the same files.

Anyway my laptop is stuck, I have restarted and it always gets to the same error messages. I have a new desktop that I am writing u on, but I love my laptop and need it for college. What can i do? Your help would be greatly appreciated. David

Is there not a Recovery partition on the hard drive? The make & model no. of the laptop would be helpful.

To make a Repair Install of the OS you require an installation CD of the same version (Home or Pro) and at the same Service Pack level as the OS on the computer.
The computer was asking for an XP SP2 CD, not a CD with only Service Pack 2.

I suggest you slipstream your copied XP CD, given that it is the correct version, i.e. Home & not Pro or vice versa with Service Pack 2 which you have downloaded .......

Slipstreaming Windows XP Service Pack 2 and Create Bootable CD

    and for reference .....

Slipstreaming Windows XP Service Pack 3 and Create Bootable CD

Generally speaking a 'borrowed' installation CD will work, but you must use the COA for the laptop.

One problem which may arise is that the copy of XP on the laptop is OEM and may have been customised by the laptop manufacturer, but you have nothing to lose by trying.
You cannot do that - the underscore .ca_ indicates that the file is compressed - it is decompressed during installation.
