I recently downloaded and tried the VideoLan Media Player which, after a while, I decided not to keep. As it did not appear to come with it's own uninstall prog or appear in the Windows control panel 'Add/Remove Programs' I was left with no alternative but to 'right click' on the program and delete it to Recycle Bin which has been since emptied.

I followed this with 'Start'>'Search' >'All Files & Folders' and deleted all references to VideoLAN which I could find.

I have since run two registry cleaning tools and also deleted all obvious 'File Types' in the Control Panel 'Folder Options'.

Despite all this I am still getting files which, when 'right clicked', still show as type VLC Video.IFO file and offering the option of opening with VLC Player; even on files which have been added to PC since the VideoLan program was deleted. I have even been to Windows Media Player and made sure this is set as default and also, again in Control Panel Folder Options made sure that the .IFO file types are set as 'Open With' WM Player. Annoyingly, in this window, it says that the default type for the .IFO file is VLC Media file.

I've exhausted my knowledge so, please, please has anybody got any further suggestions on how I might get rid of all evidence of this, now annoying, software.

Mind if I ask you what version you had? Did you see this for example:
    http://win.downloadatoz.com/tutorial/2710,how-to-uninstall-vlc-media-player-1-0-0.html

This method requires the "setup.exe" for vlc
In knowing the above perhaps you can download and reinstal and uninstal using a recommended method. And prior to uninstall make sure to unassociate all file types from from vlc options.

    #rd party "revo unistaller:

    Hi goddez1
Sorry, don't know which version I had.
I've got Revo unistaller but that was not picking up the VidoLAN program in it's interface so couldn't use it to do the uninstal.
The third link you offered me is just opening up the Google search page but thanks for your suggestions - all offers appreciated.

Have you done as I suggested in the first option. Download again and when clicking the setup for vlc choose uninstal.

Vlc should have had an entry in your control uninstall list if it didn't suggests that it wasn't installed properly in the first place. In such a case one of the methods often recommended is to reinstall and uninstall via control for a clean removal.

Google link ht list was for additional resources with people having the same problem. The keyword filtered list was meant for you to use at your leisure.

Thanks a Billion, I think you've cracked it. Downloaded & Installed VideoLAN again, then found it's uninstall.exe file. Ran that and 'BINGO' I can't find any files associated with VLC (VideoLAN) so far. Many thanks.
Just an aside, you are a bit above me when you refer to 'keyword filtered list', in simple terms (very simple for me) what does that do/mean ?.

I am so happy this worked for you. thanks for the update and your most welcome.

Keyword filtered list means, to pare down a search list to the smallest most pertinent number of hits or posts possible, one must add keywords to eliminate those posts that does not have nor mention the specific topic your looking for.

For example do a search for vlc and you will get a gazillion hits that cover all topics for vlc., add keywords such as version or uninstall [ie; vlc 1.17 uninstall] and the list will pare down to topics that discuss uninstalltions of vlc.

It's merely a way of filtering down a topic to the smallest number of hits one needs to look through to find the answer needed. :)

    Sum up
keywords are a string of words used to do a search.
Filtered is much like a sieve for the topic. Those that do not include the keywords in the string will be trapped in sieve and not shown.
