Your motherboard may or may not have a temperature sensor - and your problem could be heat related - download Everest and go Computer > Sensor.

Just before the computer shuts down can you hear the cooling fan running? - if not it may have failed allowing the CPU to overheat.

Look in Event Viewer for any error messages timed when the computer shut down.

    hi!

    hey pete,

i have downloaded Everest and looked at sensor but truly speaking i did not understand that how to look at temperature profile. Also, I can very wel hear the fun running even when the computer suddenly shutd down. In event viewer of computer..there it shows some errors but it also does not describe the problem. I even showed my laptop to system administrator in school.

    more guesses??

thanks a lot for ur time...

On my desktop the Everest sensor page shows mobo, CPU and my 2 hard drive temperatures. I don't have my laptop to hand at the moment.

    Try Motherboard Monitor

as i am not able to figure that the temperature of the laptop is giving it a problem or not?

    thanx for ur time!

Highyly unlikely that a format will affect heat one way or the other.

If you had some program that was causing the CPU to run at near 100% all the time then getting rid of that might help some but as I said, highly unlikely.

What is your Vaio model #?. I'm going to jump the gun a bit here but I'd be willing to bet that if you go to Vaio support and read about your laptop that they'll tell you since SP1, your hardware is no longer compatable with XP. Further, this is going to require that you flash your bios using their utility and the appropriate BIOS update, all available from Sony Support. Fairly simple procedure with their update tool but if you have any reservation, take it to a shop. As an aside, you better tell the shop what they need to do and point them to all the stuff on the support site or you stand a good chance of paying a considerable sum for needless repairs that aren't going to do squat re: fixing your machine. I've done quite a few of these for disgruntled owners that got their pockets picked by an unqualified tech. Do yourself a favor and do some reading first.

I could be wrong in making such an early diagnosis with very little information but you're probably not going to see my name in the bold green print anytime soon either - I lost that diplomacy scholarship.

    ;)

    OK Bindas -
I tried to help but ............
Reading your link, I'll tell you, your not quite there yet, but you are getting closer. The link confirmed enough - I nailed it in my first post with little other than your brief problem description and the name VIAO. This is a simple fix - not worth any more verbage or precious time.

I'm trying to be patient but .............
I'll ask again, what is your model # ?
I'm not trying to blow smoke up your backside, I am familiar with this problem and have tried to help. I think I've already given you the fix but if you would be kind enough to answer my question, I will confirm the exact fix. If I'm wrong, I'll tell you that too. Re-read my first post - was there anything ambiguous about it?

Get a life pal ........ I'm trying to help you out and am not interested in becoming your servant. The files are named for you but you'll have to read this and download em' - I would have done it for you but didn't appreciate your attitude so its self service from here on out.

Edit: you would be best to send this to Sony authorized service center because there is also a documented heat sensor flaw that they will repair for free if you are under warranty and there is a patch for a quite recent Windows update that caused similar behavior. Despite this, they reference a BIOS update as a potential fix for your machine although your model # is different from the one's I am familiar with and referenced, whereby installing XP SP1 created a serious hardware/software conflict.

    Here you go :

WARNING!!: Before installing this update, be sure the computer is either running from AC power or using a fully charged battery pack. If the installation of the BIOS is interrupted by power loss, the computer may not operate correctly or at all!

Before installing this BIOS update, please connect a floppy disk drive to the computer and make sure you have a blank 3½ floppy disk available. This program will format and create a bootable disk. All the data in the floppy will be erased when the disk is formatted!

During the installation of this update, be sure that you are logged in as the Administrator or as a user with Administrative rights.

To ensure that no other program interferes with the installation, save all work and close all other programs. The Taskbar should be clear of applications before proceeding.

It is highly recommended to print out these instructions as a reference during the installation process.

If either a "Severe" error or "Software Status" message box appears, please check the list of Known Issues .
    Download and Installation Instructions
1.Click the "Go to Step 2. Software Agreement" link at the bottom of this page.
2.Read the Software License Agreement and click "Accept ".
3.Download the PH-A03B10802JW.EXE file to a temporary or download directory (please note this directory for reference).
4.Go to the directory where the file was downloaded and double-click the PH-A03B10802JW.EXE file to begin the installation.
5.At the "BIOS R0203B1 Installation Utility - InstallShield Wizard" box, click Next. Please wait for the utility to verify the computer model.
6.At the "Information" window, insert a blank 3½ floppy diskette to the floppy disk drive (A:) and click OK.
7.At the "Creating the CRISIS diskette on drive A:" screen, press ENTER.WARNING!!: All the data in the floppy disk will be erased.
8.At the "The CRISIS diskette in drive A: is being formatted" screen, press ENTER. Please wait as the floppy is formatted.
9.At the "Volume label (11 characters, ENTER for none)?" prompt, type in a name (such as BIOSUPD) and press ENTER.
10.At the "QuickFormat another (Y/N)?" prompt, press the N key and then press ENTER.
11.Press ENTER again to continue. Please wait as the BIOS installation files are copied to the floppy disk.
12.At the "Press any key to continue..." prompt, press ENTER. Please wait as the BIOS installation disk is made bootable.
13.At the "Press any key to continue..." prompt, press ENTER.
14.At the "CRISIS diskette on drive A: successfully created" screen, leave the floppy disk in the drive and press ENTER.
15.At the "InstallShield Wizard Complete" screen, verify that "Yes, I want to restart my computer now" is selected and click Finish. Be sure to leave the bootable floppy disk with the BIOS files in the floppy drive. As the computer restarts, it will boot from the floppy disk instead of the hard drive. The PhoenixPhlash Utility will launch. Please wait as the installation of the BIOS will take one to two minutes to complete. Once the installation is complete, the computer will automatically turn off.
16.Eject the bootable BIOS installation disk from the drive.
    17.Turn on the computer.
18.At the black "SONY" screen, press the F2 key to enter the BIOS Setup.
19.At the "PhoenixBIOS Setup Utility" screen, press ESC key.
20.From the "Exit" menu, press the DOWN ARROW key until "Get Default Values" is highlighted.
    21.Press ENTER.
22.At the "Setup Confirmation" box, verify "Yes" is highlighted and press ENTER.
23.From the "Exit" menu, verify "Exit (Save Changes)" is highlighted and press ENTER.
24.At the "Setup Confirmation" box, verify "Yes" is highlighted and press Enter. After the computer completely restarts, the installation of the BIOS update is complete.

It is all in YOUR HANDS NOW !!!

Reading the above written by you I suggest a QUALIFIED repair person.

Why do I say that you may ask ?

I say it because I KILLED a PC DEAD because I S>C>R>E>W>E>D up.

Updating the BIOS is not for beginners. And VERY TOUCHY for even more experienced.

    Your call

Mark down the date ....... BillyBob and I are in 100% total agreement.

Send this puppy to the vet ........ I think you're in over your head bindas.

You can try the patch at Sony Support to see if this behavior was caused by a recent Windows update (don't remember the # and ain't wasting my time to look it up for you), otherwise its a heat sensor that by design is shutting you down (similar to your earlier post) or its going to require a bios upgrade and at this point I'd say that's too much of a **** shoot -

    California here we come ---->
