I have several programes that I want to stop running at startup.
I open Windows defender, go into tools and use software explorer to see the programs that run at startup but the ones I want to disable have the disable button shaded out, how do I disable them?

    Regards Paul

First, open each program you want to change and poke around in each one's Settings/Preferences/Options (whatever terminology each uses) for a way to disable its loading on startup.

For any you cannot find that setting for, go to Start>Run (or press the Windows key/R key combination) and in the Run box type "msconfig" (without the quotes).

In the Msconfig window, go to the Startup tab and uncheck any entries there you want to disable from loading when Windows starts, click OK when done.

You'll then get a window asking if you want to reboot now. Now or later, when you next reboot the computer, you will get a message about using "selective startup." Since you selected things not to start up, that's what you want so check the box for "Don't show me this message again" and then the OK or Yes button (can't remember which word it uses).

See if that sorts things out.

Hi Paul. In addition to what Miz said, sometimes msconfig won't show all the startup programs that are loading with Windows.

If you can't disable all the startup program using msconfig download and run Autoruns.

Save the folder to your desktop. Right click the folder and click extract all to extract the folder. Once the folder is extracted open the folder. Right click the Autoruns.exe program and click Run as Administrator. Once the program opens click the Logon Tab to display all the startup programs that are starting up with your computer.

Highlight each entry you want to disable and simply uncheck its checkbox to disable it. If you would rather delete an entry from the list then highlight it and click the Red X button in the toolbar menu to delete it.
