    Hi Everyone,
Stumbled across the site while trying to find a reason for a issue with the wifes laptop!?
We have a IBM R40 that seems to have grown a mind of it's own, & it ain't pretty!!! we've had this laptop for about 18mths (purchasd as a re-man unit)
What is happening is that the left mouse button seem to get stuck on, it likes to move things, turn things on & off, will even delete things if not careful  and today it won't actully function?
I have re-installed from both the original IBM Pre-Load (XP Pro) discs, Which I had to buy, as well as from my XP home disc & installed all IBM drivers manually & upgraded to SP3, I did the installations step by step to see if it may be a software conflict and it got extremely worse after I put all the music back into it's folder.
Anyone had similar problems? either with this type of machine or a different laptop

I am glad you asked, because the same questions occur to me and I have not ever seen a post that supplies the answers. Looking forward to some illuminating comments.
    Thanks !

Are you referring to the touchpad buttons or to an external conventional mouse?

If the former most likely a mechanical problem - had similar on an old HP - left pad button would work, but you had to press in a very precise spot.

If you haven't tried a mouse I suggest you do so and see if the problem is replicated.

Touch pads can usually be switched off.

    Mouse trap?

    Hi Pete,
Yes we were using an external mouse, a Benq USB wireless, as well.

I pulled the keyboard out yesterday & took it across the road to the mechanics & blew it out, reseated the connectors on the touch pad, Keyboard, Ram and even the HDD, turned the machine back on & it worked fine for a couple of hours, then while watching the news using the TV card it started to play up again, turning programs on/off in the back ground

This morning I plugged the mouse back in & disabled the touch pad & at the moment it is running ok, when the fault first appeared it would do the same with either T/p or W/m acting originally as if you wanted to crop a photo?
I will see how it goes, with the touch pad disabled & let you know later.
    Thanks
    Jac

    Seems to be fixed

    Thanks Pete,
So far after running with the touch pad disabled this machine seems to be working ok, I have been using it constantly since turning it on this morning & doing as you advised
    Regards Jac:)

Let's hope it stays that way :) - it rather looks like a problem with the touchpad buttons.
