    Hello all!

It´s possible/probable that my knowledge on this subject is too rudimentary but MVM has worked well for me. I haven´t noticed it since it has been working in the background.

In another thread, reboot said that SMJ is not all good. More options but also an issue with it staying loaded and icons showing for each page requiring java.

In a couple of months, Microsoft will terminate its support for MVM. Will users who stick with MVM be more vulnerable to security risks as time passes?

    Is SMJ the only alternative?

    Thanks for Your time,
    Christer

Because of legal issues, Sun is the only way to go. They're improving the Windows version of java every day, and it IS better than MVM. I'm sure they'll bow to user pressure and do away with the taskbar icon. For now, I'm sure they simply want users to know that the java they're getting is from SUN and NOT MS.
You can't get MVM from MS any more. It's not included in any updates, not even on the corporate page, and anyone using an older IE update file, will get an error about java/VM every time.
Sure, you could simply do a reload of Windows every time java quits, and get the original VM off the XP disk. Do you really want to?

In the latest version of Sun Java which I installed a couple of weeks ago (no problems as yet, BTW) the Java icon that appears in the System Tray (Notification Area) to show that a Java VM is running can be turned off through Control Panel > Java Plug In - Basic Tab.

Christer--This has the potential of being a very long thread. :D
If MVM works for you, why mess around with something else--at least until early next year? MS is working on a proprietary replacement. It is associated with the .NET program and is aleady available for business/developer users. That should give it a little break-in before we, consumers, are offered it. That's when I plan to make a choice.

    Thanks all for Your responses!

    Reboot,

no I don´t want to mess around with outdated software but as long as it works and doesn´t imply a security vulnerability, I thought that I could wait and see what happens.

    PeteC,

it seems like the fix that reboot wanted is already there.

    Welshjim,

I have read that article and it was the reason for asking if SMJ is the only alternative.
Reboot is probably right that going with the original is the best option but maybe MS has something in the cooker.

About this thread potentially becoming long, well, I´ve never seen a poll here ...... :D ...... "and please state the reasons for Your vote" ...... ......

    Hey Christer,

When MS did their secutity patch of JVM - late last year I think, it was the ONLY MS patch I ever had trouble with, made both XP and WinME run like molasses. So I gave up on the MS version and went with Sun's. Haven't regretted it.

    Hi Charles!

When I installed XP in june, contrary to Your recommendation not to ...... ...... I also installed SP1 and all Updates at the same time. Included was the latest/last update to MVM - Q816093. It all went well and I´m ...... :) ...... that it did.

I can´t compare XP with and without that update but my computer is much quicker now compared to running ME.

I´ll see if others chime in but right now I´m leaning towards basking in the Sun ...... ......

    Regards,
    Christer

    Hi Christer,

I'll be doing a XP reinstall Thursday for a friend and I won't be following my own advice either :)

Hmmm...FWIW, I have both, and they are compatible on my system. Seems like it depends on what you are trying to do as to which one "turns on ". You can still download M$VM off the net, but I forget where, and I'm too tired to look right now. It's only a 5Mb file. Anyone who wants it can email me off list, and I'll send it, via email or ICQ. BTW, I use M$VM as default, and I did update it with the same patch Christer mentioned. No problems.
