    Hi all. I've been trying to setup a static ip on my wireless Netgear WGR614 v7 router for sometime now.

    I can get static ip's available to me using www.portforward.com by entering my Default Gateway, and current IP address, but they give me ones still starting with 86.21 which is what my Dynamic IP starts with, however the Netgear router requires the static route to start with 192.168 (i think), but I can't find a static ip stating with this.

    Any ideas how to sort this out?

    Regards,
    Chris

    You're going about this the wrong way, turn off DHCP on your router (or reserve IP addresses if you wish some systems on your LAN to have dynamic IP's. Then set up the static IP's 192.168.x.x on the systems you wish to have static. NOTE the 192.168 range is private and not accessible from the WAN side unless you use a DMZ or port forwarding.

    If your ISP gives you a static ip then you can set the router with THAT static ip. But if you want static ips for the computers on the network then you must set those static ips on each computer individually. This is done by:
    1. rt click My Network Places > select Properties
    2. rt click the icon for the network adapter (either ireless Network Connection or Local Area Connection) > select Properties.
    3. double click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) > click Properties button
    4. radio button Use the following ip address: > enter address 192.168.x.x
    5. radio button Use the following dns server addresses: > Preferred dns server = ip address of router = 192.168.x.1

    x = 0 or 1 in above examples.
    Repeat for each computer on the lan.
    If running a server on a lan computer then config the router to forward a port to that lan address of the comp w/ the server.
