How many is too many? I'm getting serious lagging on my computer and I looked at my startup and I have 34 processes, is this normal? I have Startup Cop on here but I don't know if it's actually DOING anything... Just wondering, my computer takes time to startup etc..

Just wonderin... thought I remembered someone saying that you don't need more than 20 or something...

    Thanks in advance.

A lot of unnecessary services run with XP - Home and Pro - stooping these can gain a little speed and save resources.

Look at Black Viper's site for details.

Task Manager shows that I have 34 processes running - this is par for the course on this XP Pro m/c.

I use XP Home. There are 21 processes running, four of them accounted for by a clipboard program, one instance of Internet Explorer, a firewall and Task Manager itself.

Like PeteC said, a lot of those processes are created by unnecessary services and Black Viper's guide to adjusting those services is the one I use to pare them down to what I need.

Have you scanned for spyware? If not, download, install, immediately update and then run Spybot and/or AdAware. Read the help files to familiarize yourself with how they work. I recommend you use them both since each tends to find things the other misses. Have them clean up any spyware found.

Then, to be doubly sure, download and run CWShredder (link to the download is near the bottom of the page).

The default xp home install has 32 services loading at startup!
Over half of them are unnecessary unless you are running a server or on a domain. 6 of them are security risks to have running and most people have no clue what these really do.

My systm, xppro, has 15 processes running at startup.

Well, I did all of the above and now have 27 running at startup.. guess that is better! But, it seems that my system is pretty normal, eh?
