I dunno just what I did here, usually I have a fair handle of my messups, but this one has me flummoxed.

1st: P-IV 2.4 gig home-built, WIN98SE, 512MbRam, 120GB HD in seven partitions, Zone Alarm, Spybot, AVG, Spyware Blaster, AdAware personal on a Verizon DSL line.

Whenever it rains, I seem to lose any speed on DSL so I wasn't too suprised when everything slowed down to a crawl, but decided this AM to cycle the modem to see if that might help... When I went upstairs to where the computer is I noticed a LOT of activity on the router and modem lights, and so ran Hijack... found MSUPDATE.EXE. Ran ProcView, killed that and a Symantec Liveupdate listing, then check the boxes for those in Hijak and said OK...

Went back to start Firefox and I got a splashbox saying that Windows could not find "START.EXE" and asking that I point it to the correct location. START.EXE is usually in C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND, so I pointed to that, Windows little spash box disapperared and now I cna't start anything on the computer. Whenever I hit an icon or navigate to the .exe file for any porgram, all I get is a barely-visible-it's-so-fast appartition (looks like a DOS box, but it's so fast I can't tell) and back to the desktop.

    What did I do?

I'm posting this on the networked computer, which is moving like the proverbial mollasses in January, so be patient for replies.

Let me know if there's any other info I should post for you.

You have a couple of infections at least - start.exe and msupdate.exe.

Moved to Removing Spyware & Viruses forum with title edit.

    • Open Spybot Search & Destroy.
    • In the Mode menu click "Advanced mode" if not already selected.
    • Choose "Yes" at the Warning prompt.
    • Expand the "Tools" menu.
    • Click "Resident ".
    • Uncheck the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active." box.
    • In the File menu click "Exit" to exit Spybot Search & Destroy.

Reboot to safe mode and delete the following file.

    C:\WINDOWS\START MENU\PROGRAMS\STARTUP\MSUPDATE.EXE

Boot back into normal mode and create a new HijackThis log. I would also like to see a startup list from HijackThis. Go to the misc tools section (click config from the scan window), check both boxes next to the Generate StartupList log button, then click the button. Post both logs and let me know if there's any change in behavior.

    More info

Well, I went poking around my files and rediscovered Reticulated's "EXEfix08.reg" and added it thru the C:\ prompt... all my EXE's were back!

So I then ran a Hijak and checked for MSUPDATE, which did not appear, but a lot of Symantec stuff did show up again. Ran the Control Panel's "Add/Delete" and got rid of all the Symantec leftovers and rebooted, figuring I'd get a clean Hijak log minus all the Symantec stuff and MSUPDATE to show here, but when the computer rebooted, the EXE files were right back to not working.

    Boom. No Hijack file.

I tried re-doing the EXEfix08.reg, but when the computer started, I got two small windows in the lower right of the computer stating that a registry change was denied by "Resident" "according to the blacklist settings" (as close as I can remember).

No EXE's are presently working and I'm at my wit's end to figure out what's going on. I "think" I got most of the bad guys, but I'm just not sure which of the programs is producing the "resident" window spoken of above.

    Any ideas at all?

Yes. See my last post. Tea-Timer needs to be disabled. Then check for the file and delete if found. Then run the exe fix.

    Oh, boy.

(which is 'goysih" for "Oy VEH! ")

Just a check-in to let you know that so far (since 5AM)I've finally managed to get SpyBot open and to uncheck the "Protection of all.... systems" and close out. (Took so long because it wanted to check for updates... three times!)

Now the problem is that I'm using a USB mouse and keyboard... when I boot to Safe mode, the keyboard is recognized, but the mouse is not, so I have to scare up a PS2 connector, or a PS2 mouse (or-[shudder]- a Serial mouse from somewhere so I can navigate to and kill that file.

Just wanted to let you know I'm, if not ON it, then somewhere in it's immediate vicinity.

Thanks for the help so far... hope the flooding isn't affecting you... now to find that (censored) mouse....

(Worst part is that once I get the computer cleaned up and running, I then have to call Verizon's Customer "Care" and try to straighten out the DSL problem. Wonder where they are now? Last time was the Phillipines... Wanna bet they've moved it to Ulan Bator?)

    OK.

Got a PS2 adapter and the mouse wrked.

Went into Safe mode and opened the path specified, but there was no entry in the STARTUP folder of any kind... I must'a nailed it on one of the last strafing runs.

Booted back to C.P.Only and ran the EXEfix08 and restarted computer.... Windows ran scandisk and found registry errors, restored an older registry copy and restarted...

It refused to read all the little drivers from my "Ergonomic Super-Duper Touchy-Feelie Keyboard ", but so what? never used 'em anyway... after which it restored setup files, burped twice and then informed me it could not find "scrsvr.exe" (neither can I) that was specified in the WIN.INI files. Maybe I'm stupid, but I couldn't find it in the WIN.INI files.

I was getting the same sort of message a day or so ago for "speedy.scr " and "nata!.pif " and can't find either of those anywhere, either.

I also got an occasional message from ZA that something called "ProtoType V2.3.0 Build 500" was trying to access the internet and can't find that anywhere on my box, either.

First create a new folder on the desktop and name it HJT, then move HijackThis.exe into that folder and run it from there. Scan again with HijackThis, close all other windows and fix the following entries.

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
    F1 - win.ini: run=C:\WINDOWS\SCRSVR.EXEc:\windows\scrsvr.exe

Take a look at the following two links.
    http://www.trendmicro.com/vinfo/virusencyclo/default5.asp?VName=WORM_OPASERV.AD&VSect=T
    http://www.trendmicro.com/vinfo/virusencyclo/default5.asp?VName=WORM_OPASERV.AI&VSect=T

Then, download and run the removal tool in the next link, as directed, after reading the entire page.

    http://www.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2002-093020-3622-99

Post a fresh HijackThis log when done and let me know how your comp is behaving.

    It never rains

    but it...

Got online last nite at almost full speed, read your post and went to the first link shown but we lost power just as I was starting to look at it.

Power back at 0230 and I went to bed.

This AM I'm back up (sorta... about 600bps!) and I wanted to check before I do something stupid... on the two pages for the OPA worm, there are several patche links and the like... am I to install the ones appropriate to WIN98SE ? I'm confused because your post said, "take a look at ", rather than, "use (whatever) ", and I don't wanna mess up any further than I already have.

I read the third link and will do so as soon as we clarify the above.

Lemme know and I'll hope I can get online to see the message.

thanks for your help so far... sorry I'm such a "boofhead ".

The first 2 links were meant to be informative, since you mentioned previous messages about "speedy.scr" and "nata!.pif ". Those 2 along with the current "scrsvr.exe" are all related to the same infection, and the tool referenced in the 3rd link should cleanup all of it. Applying the MS patch would be a good move as well, if it wasn't installed previously via Windows Update (patch was issued in 2000)

If you open ZA to the Program Control section, Programs tab, "ProtoType V2.3.0 Build 500" should be listed. Click the entry and it should show the path to the executable related to it at the bottom un the Entry Details section.

Ok. Understood all that, but I've one more small issue you may be able to help with.

The instructions for the opafix file say that the patch really needs to be installed prior to continuing, but the address given (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS00-072.asp) returns a 'page not found ". I suppose that it went away with all the other WIN98 stuff. Is there an alternate location you know of where it may be downloaded?

Re: Prototype, speedy and nata!, I haven't seen them repeat since I did the cleanups, and ZA shows a path to the startup folder but there's nothing showing in there. I'll assume they're kaput for the moment.

Sorry for delay in replying... no power again most of yesterday and last nite. I'm getting to be a namby-pamby in my old age, but AC is a definte MUST when it's close to 100 and humid... had to split for the Senior Centre to cool off!

If it ain't one thing, it's two others.

Here's another hijak... see anything else I need to worry about?
