Well my computer crashed over the weekend and I cannot get it to open up Windows so I can at least reload from my cddisk to fix it properly. When I reboot the computer now it will open up the Windows98 opening page and then I will get an explorer error message and then a blank screen. I tried to reboot from by backup boot disk but after getting the info from the disk it gives me the same error message and then nothing. Ran Scandisk from dos and nothing found. Tried to get into safe mode and it will open, but there is no start button or borders around the page and it is completely blank. I can get into F8 from startup and get into command prompt ok, but even tried to to get to the cd or floppy drive and it says invalid command. When I try type in letters a, d, e, or x it gives me the same invalid command response. I hope its not fubar, but could use some help getting me back to where I can reload windows again to fix it. Thanks in advance.

    Hello Mad

Get to safe mode selection screen. But chose DOS.

You should end up at c:\ or c:\windows\command

type the following and hit enter (there is a space after deltree and before the /y

    c:\windows\command\deltree c:\*.swp /y

    After that completes.

    c:\windows\command\deltree c:\windows\temp\*.* /y

This will clear some windows temp files.

Now try to reboot into SAFE Mode. Try and not let it get to normal boot up yet.

If it does come up in SAFE Mode then click Start-Run and type the following and hit enter or click OK.

    cleanmgr /sageset:99

It will present a list. Check all items on the list and click OK or hit enter.

Next again click Start-Run and type the following and hit enter or click OK.

    cleanmgr /sagerun:99

    It will do additional cleanups.

    Then try a normal boot.

At this point let us know the exact results of each step of above.

Hey thanks Mike. The funny thing is that I did some searching in the archive on similiar problems after I posted and tried the scanreg/restore command first when I got home just to see what it would do. Sure enough it brought me back to life again! But, after I had control again I did a thorough debugging of the system and sure enough one of my programs picked up a wintrojan virus that had infiltrated through all my virus protection and had killed my system. Must be a new one as I have never had one be able to get through yet, but its gone now anyway. Thanks for all the help.

    Great

A registry restore would have been my next suggestion.

But I believe in computer Hygene first.

I would have cleaned up first.
